what are the differences between these 2 jr boarding school.
any experinces? ideas?

Why are you confining yourself to these two?

I’d suggest also looking at Cardigan Mountain School and Eaglebrook if you’re a boy and want single sex; Bement or Fay if you’re looking for co-ed. I think these all compare very favorably to the ones you mentioned.

Have you reviewed the websites? That’s a good place to start.

my boy is accepted at those 2 with some financial aid

Hm. Must first state that I have a son and we applied to only all boys JBS. So there is a (possible) bias in the response.

Is it too late to look into Eaglebrook or Cardigan? Call them and be frank about the FA. They will be frank with you. (Also you can look into Fessenden and Hillside- both all boys.)

Did you visit the two (IMS and Rumsey)?

I think my main questions would revolve around the curriculum and where they ‘feed’ - and make sure that they are kids that are comparable to your child. If IMS says ‘we feed Hotchkiss’ - but only the top 3 graduates go there and your child won’t be in that mix, then it isn’t a reason to choose the school.

My #2 question would revolve around dorm life/advising/technology. Can they have cell phones? What are the limits on the internet? Can they facebook during study hall? How big are the dorms? What kind of communication can you expect from the advisor?

We visited IMS campus and know a grad who had a great experience. We wanted all boys. Never visited Rumsey, but looked seriously at their literature and website and were impressed.
Considered it for younger son who seems less academically proficient. Rumsey seemed set up to help kids learn to be good students and succeed. (But the Cardigan PEAKS program is unparalled in that regard… imo.)

Sorry I can’t help you further. JBS is a great experience and will really prepare your child for the curriculum and life at a prep school. Good luck!

I am a MID year student. I got into both indian mt. and rumsey hall. i looked at both schools many times. in the end i decided that i would prefer to go to indian mt school. the main reason I chose to attend indian Mt. school is because the people i met there. when i visited rumsey people were friendly- but indian mt. school looked more like a nurturing community. i currently attend ims! i actually am in study hall right now! i like ims because the people, chances and experiences i hav had here. i came in january 2011. i think that ims has a very diverse community and a great boarding life. the people i have met are extremely nice. The people here are very friendly and inclusive towards everyone. the food is exceptional, and we enjoy it. I would also liek to point out that ims sports teams are ahamazing! we normally win against many of the top secondary schools. i would also like to say that ims is a place where you can try new things practice old things and not be ashamed. this year i learned how to ski, play the guitar, block print and i have learned many new languages from beign a boarder. many people have told me “oh you go to boardign school, doe sit sux?” i can honestly say that it doesn’t and it changed my life sooo much! i used to hate going to school. now school doesn’t seem that bad! personally if i wer you i would go to ims! i hope you come! ism has given me a new outlook on life, people and the chances i will have in life if i try new things. gtg the study hall bell is a bout to ring! i could tell you how great ims is but ur just gonna hav 2 take mty word for it and come!!! :)
