<p>You are mistaken. 3:57 was the men's mile record back in the mid-1950s. The current mile record is 3:43.13 and it was set in 1999 by Hicham El Guerrouj.</p>

<p>as others have pointed out though, 3:43 is the record and just so you know, once you get to like 4:40, every second you take off becomes harder but doable. Once you get to 4:00, each second is like exponentially harder to take off. 4:35 is light miles away from 3:43</p>
