Running a website as an EC?

Will colleges count running a website as an EC? I am thinking about creating a site that provides analysis of the sport that I play, among other sport-related topics. I was wondering if this is a project that I should pursue or not, as it will be time-consuming.
Thanks

Sure, if you are actively involved in it, I think that’s a good thing to list. I am guessing your sport is fencing (call me a mind reader) and I don’t know if there are already lots of website devoted to that, but it relates to what you engage in. The key is to not just create a domain name and a webpage. If you pursue it, it will be a big endeavor to make it useful and usable. You will want to provide a link to it, and no doubt colleges will check it out. Good luck.

Hudl in Lincoln, NE is a “leading software company revolutionizing the way coaches and athletes prepare for and stay ahead of the competition.” It is an extremely successful company that probably grew out of an interest similar to yours. Of course that’s a valid EC! It might even become a thriving business for you one day.

Pursue the project if it is something that interests and excites you. Don’t do it simply because you think it would look good for college admissions.

Thanks for the replies. I hope that I will be able to invest a lot of time in it on the weekends. I am doing it because fencing (you guessed it) is a sport that I love.

Valid. Not a tip for a tippy top college (OP also asked about Ivies.) Some reasons: it’s generally a solo thing, often one by lots of kids, not all that difficult to do. And, too often: kids do this instead of more stretchy responsibilities in their own schools and communities. For OP, it’s also, as he says, not outside his love of fencing. (You don’t want them to read down your ECs and think, “Fencing, fencing, and fencing.” Unless you’re recruited, they can want to see balance in your sum total efforts. Do you have that?)

@lookingforward Those sound like good points… So are you saying that I should not spend my time on this if I want to go to Ivies (unless I am recruited)?

Spend your time on it because you FEEL like spending time on it. It is a fool’s errand to craft your resume for college applications.
