Well I won Class President this year (Freshmen) and just won for next year as well (Sophomore).

The Freshmen year election was very well contested with 3 relatively popular candidates, and I simply spoke to large groups of people about the problems past student councils had and what I would do to correct them. I think I eventually won 380ish out of the 470 votes.

Then for my more recent Sophomore year election, it was apparently the most competitive election at my school's history. We had six extremely popular candidates, who posted a total of more than 1600 posters (yes, they were counting xD) and campaigned day and night with facebook groups, emails, fliers, etc. I really didn't do that much campaigning this time around due to the lack of time and "preparation" I had to do for USAMO and things like that, but my supporters from the previous election supported and campaigned for me quite a bit. They wouldn't release the numbers this time around, but the vice principle said that I won "by a hefty margin."

Essentially, what Courtney8 said is true, it boils down to being a popularity contest, but what you should do is,

Try to build up a reputation for yourself in the months preceding an election. (if you haven't already)

Be nice to everyone and don't ever sound condescending or arrogant while campaigning.

If you have time, talk to as many people as you can, telling them why you are the right choice for the position you are running for. (i.e. creativity, leadership, etc)
