Running For Student Council

Hai you guys! (: I'm a fresh(wo)man this year~ LOL And I'm running for Secretary this year~ (: Here's the thing. I'm literally running against the most popular girl in my grade. I have to make a one minute speech. And besides introducing myself, I'm trying to figure out ways to win votes and make my speech witty/funny. Does anyone have any ideas? (: I'd really love any type of advice I can get. Also, I'll probably be passing out bribes (aka candy/cookies/stickers) the day before. Can you please post any ideas you might have of how I can win votes?

TL;DR
running for secretary. 9th grade. help.

This is the time to show them everything. Make sure they remember you.

^ Hahaha, but no. In all seriousness, do something different. Make yourself stand out. When I ran for the student council last year, I went to the edge of the stage and sat down and talked to everyone just as if we were all having some huge conversation. Needless to say, I won. Also, this other girl in my grade once did this thing where she asked everyone to move a bit, and then she said, “My father said if I could move the audience, I’d win”. She got pretty big laughs for that and won that year.

So say something funny, and don’t forget to make a point. Call out people individually, ask questions, or make them ask questions… Make it an interactive thing, ya know? Just be as natural and relaxed and confident as you can. Also don’t forget to look good, lol!

Well, I guess that’s all I really have as far as advice goes… Good luck! :)

I’m our class’s treasurer (2015), and honestly we dont make speeches but, we did in elementary school and I think the same rule would apply. In elementary, I ran for President against the most popular girl in the school (elementary school popularity lol.) and two other people. At that time I was terribly unknown (I was in the elementary gifted classes, so they were the only people I knew.)

Anyway, I made my speech proudly and officially. I addressed a lot of issues, along with making everyone laugh. Anyway I won the election, but the policy was if it was really close, the top two people would run off. Then I lost the runoff by like 2 votes. Honestly that was a complete miracle.

A speech can make such a large impact. Even today, although I dont know everyone who I went to elementary school, you’d be really hardpressed to find one person from my elementary school graduating class who doesnt know who I am (and that really helped with HS elections). So even if you don’t win, make your speech memorable because itll come in handy in the long run.
