Running for Student Government in College: Any Tips??

I'd like to run for student body in college. I'm attending a prestigious university this fall (incoming freshman) and I'm a bit hesitant about doing so. I believe that I have the skills and devotion to want to be a part of my school's community, however I've never actually ran for a student body position before (except VP in 4th Grade but I don't think that counts :D).

I won't deny the fact that I used to be a loner my first few years in high school (for various reasons--self esteem, "introvertedness", appearance, etc), but I've branched out since then and I'd like to make a new start with wanting my to join student government. At my college, there isn't exactly a President, VP, Treasurer, or Secretary but instead 5-7 members on a student committee. So I'd just be another player. Anyways, I can speak relatively well (although I stutter occasionally and fumble with words at times), I have ideas and contributions that I'd like to make in support of our class, and I have experience (not necessarily with Student Government on the high school level but I did hold many leadership positions on a variety of clubs and organizations in school).

I'm just a tad worried about what to expect and I'm afraid that being a minority would set me back as well. I was hoping that you guys on cc could help a gal out. How are campaigns for student government usually run. What can I do to boost my chances in running for this position?

PLZ and THX

Try to get a position in your dorms. I know my villages have councils and people are elected for that. You might want to start there.

Be good-looking, dress sharply, you’ll be fine. Nobody takes student government seriously (although it’s always nice to think the ones actually in the student govt wanna make the school better), so what really matters is just being able to make people think you’re someone they’d definitely have a beer with.

Just know you’ll be up against some psychos who thirst for true political power.
