I am a sophomore in high school, and i am considering doing running start next year at my local community college. I know that there is the whole budget cut to UW and i am afraid that that will impact whether I get into UW or not. I've heard that because of their budget cuts, not only are they bringing less in state students, but also transfer students. Thats a double negative for me. I'm still thinking about doing running start, but I wanted to know other peopls opinions.

I've been wanting to get into UW basically since middle school and would be devastated if i didn't make it.

Running start? or just regular school?

My son did Running Start and was accepted into U.W and Honors. I know other students with the same stats. I have read that the U.W. likes to see Running Start and good grades.

could i possibly know what year that was? I know in the past running start was encouraged, but im kind of wondering whats going to happen with the upcoming year

He was just accepted this year and most, if not all, of his friends in Running Start were accepted to the U.W. too :)

thats great! do you know his sat scores and gpa?

I did running start junior and senior years, and am going to Uw this fall. I really think it made the difference for getting me in. I took hard classes during running start as well which kind of hurt my GPA but they must’ve liked it.

SAT 1800, GPA 3.85 after 10th grade… 3.6 now!

I would generally say that it is a very good idea, however, you should be really careful because of the budget cuts right now.

I’m currently doing Running Start and I’m a senior and I wanted to finish up my AA next year as a regular student, however, I’m unable to do so right now because five classes that I needed to graduate with my AA have all been cut.

It also depends on what kind of field you want to get into - at least from my experience.
One of my friends had a 3.8 college GPA/4.0 HS GPA and she’ll complete her AA this year and she got accepted to UW and their Honors program.
My other friend who had the same GPA’s applied to UW with intending to major in Business and she got rejected, even though she had all her prerequisites completed and will complete her Associate in Business before HS graduation.
They were both members of Phi Theta Kappa, the Honors society for community college students, and both got accepted to other very good schools like the University of Berkeley and even the University of Virginia.

What I also heard was that UW accepted more Out of State students this year because of the budget cuts so be aware of that - I’m not sure if it’ll be the same way next year but who knows.
[Local News | Why straight-A’s may not get you into UW this year | Seattle Times Newspaper](http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2014670294_admissions03m.html)

If you do Running Start - it’s a great program and I’m really glad that I did it because it saved me a lot of time and money - be careful of the budget cuts and apply to several backup universities, in case UW won’t accept you.

I wish you the best of luck!

If I recall, the SAT was 2020 and GPA 3.65. I think the SAT is above the normal for the general U.W. population but in the mid range or lower for Honors students so don’t let those numbers intimidate you.

I would strongly advise that you go to one of the information sessions that the U.W. offers in the fall for students who want to get admitted. I can’t remember the name of the sessions but they will have it on the website, I am sure, at the beginning of the school year.

The admission counselors were wonderful and gave really good advise on how to get in the U.W. They stressed that they not only look at GPA and SAT but your activities and being able to articulate what they meant to you as well as strong and thoughtful essays, so spend time on those essays!

I will say one thing, if you decide to do Running Start, take it really serious as they want to see strong grades.

Best wishes!

Aheadofthegame: they cut the classes you needed to graduate?? does that mean your not finishing up?

tessey64: thank you ! :)

lalasasquach: Yes, exactly. I will not be able to finish up unless I change both my majors - I’m double majoring in Political Science and Economics - and major in something like Nursing, however, I have no intention of doing that.

My community college specifically cut 180 classes and as far as I know all community and technial colleges in WA suffer right now because of budget cuts. I think I read in my school’s newspaper that they have a 3.6 billion budget shortfall but don’t credit me for that.

Anyways, I really don’t want to scare you but I would check with my local community college if I were you and ask them specifically about what programs they are planning to cut.

I’m in running start now and I love it.Taking running start only gives you extra abilities, if you dont take running start then you’ll get normal high school credits, if you do take running start then if there accepted you get extra credits if they dont take them you get the same credits you would get for normal high school classes. There really isnt any bad side to running start as far as I can see

I agree with everyone’s responses, especially aheadofthegames.

The intended major seems to be CRITICAL in whether UW chooses to admit a Running Start student. As ahead mentioned, the friend that did not get in wanted to major in Business. Admission into UW’s Foster School of Business is very competitive, so I believe that they would look for a candidate that A: focused their time on AP math classes (Calc, Stats, etc), just as they would to admit people into Engineering and Medical programs.
Remember - UW is hailed for their math and science based programs, so you need to be a desirable candidate in those fields. If you are leaning towards majoring in those fields I’d advise to take AP classes at your High School.

Personally, I’m set up and have picked my major as Education (or at least, I want to study at UW’s college of Education, ranked 8th in the US, woohoo!). While it still has high standards, can you see how taking CC classes for this sort of degree would be different than taking AP’s at your high school? AP Calc and AP Enviro aren’t necessarily key courses for my intended Major, which is why (I’ve been told by an advisor) I’m a desirable Running Start candidate.

Does this make sense? I’m sorry if it seems confusing. Let me know if you need clarification!

i also did running start during my junior and senior year. I just graduated from high school this year and finishing my AA degree this fall. I already applied for UW winter quarter. I didn’t post my SAT/ACT scores because it’s not needed and my GPA aren’t that good… it just 3.3. I think I wrote pretty good personal statement. I have also did so many extra curriculum activities during high school and volunteered more than 200 hours. But I don’t know what my chances are getting into uw?
My major is in Nursing but I am done with my prerequisites yet… but I still applied to UW as a pre major with interest in Nursing. I also wrote that I work at hospital as Nursing Assistant. Do they accept pre major transfer student??
