rural and greek.

my son is a junior and we are starting our college search. I found Sewanee and fell in love with what i read, and with talking to a few people who know people who have attended. For my son, i know he will have concerns about it being "rural" and about the greek percentage. He has grown up in a small town, and really wanted to look at colleges in larger cities and he has just never been interested in fraternities etc. Anyone who has attended got some counter arguments? with a few in hand i think i can convince him to at least visit. Also any comments on their chemistry program?

The boys wear coats and ties to class. Girls wear skirts and dresses.

If your son can deal with that, the campus is gorgeous. Very remote, but gorgeous. All of the Greek activities, such as parties, are open to everyone on campus.

It would be ideal for a person who liked outdoorsy stuff, such as hiking.

thank you Linda, do they wear coats and ties at all times? on the website and videos etc i didnt see that, (i did see the order of the gowns tradition) He's not particularly outdoorsy but i think he would still appreciate the setting. Its close enough to us that we could probably manage a visit and let the college speak for itself i guess. If the rural setting and greek life are his strongest impressions vs the academics it wouldnt be a fit i guess.

When my daughter and I toured Sewanee a few years ago, we were told that students dress to code about 50% of the time.

My son is a freshman at Sewanee. I want to clarify that there is no official dress code, however it is traditional to dress nicely for class, chapel and special events. Yes, there are guys who wear a tie to class, but my son says he wears khakis and a polo shirt most days. Sewanee is a special place and I encourage you to visit and see for yourself.

thanks for the info... we are so early in the search process as we hit a snag early on re finances, i want him to get a feel for different types of schools because we cant visit all the ones he might be interested in, but thought we could check out small, lac, conservative, liberal, large state univ, research oriented type.
Does your son like it? what did he major in?

Yes, our son is very happy at Sewanee. He doesn't know what his major will be, but he still has a while to figure that out. That's one of the advantages of a liberal arts school. We're so grateful that he's happy with his choice and is having a wonderful experience.

Good luck on your search - it's quite an experience!

ramblinwreck, can you go into details why Sewanee is a special place? How is its atmosphere beyond what described in brochures or website?

I'm an international student and don't havee chance to visit the school yet, so I will appreciate if you can tell me more. Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

Since you won't have the chance to visit Sewanee, I suggest two DVDs:
1, VIDEC Inc. You can order a free DVD or VHS from them about Sewanee. It's a pretty slick marketing video.
2. Collegiate Choice Walking Tours Videos - college videos, campus tours, college guides, college planning, college admissions You can buy their DVD of the admissions tour. Not slick at all, but honest. I don't know if they've updated it recently; the one I saw a few years ago was made when the dining hall was being built (and it is gorgeous!).
