Rural & Urban

There are some stunning boarding school campuses in New England. I was in Newport, RI last week and saw St. George’s for the first time. Beautiful spot. Deerfield has always been a personal favorite too. St. Paul’s seems to have an idyllic boarding school campus, although when we visited there it was ‘wicked cold’ with at least 3 feet of snow on the ground. I bet it’s spectacular in the Autumn season. Hotchkiss might be the best maintained boarding school campus I’ve ever seen.

Let’s not forget the West Coast…

Okay, so I’m a bit biased, but Santa Barbara is a pretty darn nice place to go to school. Cate School doesn’t have any gothic spires or wing’ed beavers (I’d love to see a wing’ed beaver though!), however it does have more than 300 days of sunshine each year and enjoys a comfortable year-round average temperature maximum of 74 and an average minimum of 56 degrees (fahrenheit). The campus is situated on a mesa surrounded by mountains and the sea, with gorgeous views in every direction. The architecture is simple and classic Spanish Colonial influence.

Some of the other West Coast boarding schools like Thacher, Webb Schools and Stevenson aren’t too shabby either… Have a look.

Personal preference… but I do not think anyone can beat St. Paul’s for the sheer beauty of the campus and setting. The campus is rural, with 2,000 acres, ponds, lakes, streams and fantastic woods and paths. In fairness, I like the outdoors. Some prefer a city, a large town or a village. It is all personal. But SPS is walking distance to Concord NH and 1hr 15min to Boston Common. I like Deerfield as a classic New England town and Andover has a really huge campus. St. Georges owns a nice boat.

Obviously, maps do not do justice to the size, setting or beauty of these campuses, but a fair place to start. If anyone has better links or schools to add, feel free to do so.

Just to keep perspective . . .

St.George’s - 1/4 mile from good surf ;-)

Kei

Would it be wierd if I took pictures during the tour? JK ;)

Actually, urbanflop, I was wondering the same thing. Can I? I mean just snapping photos as I go by :)

Yes take pictures. It is fine. If you see lots of schools it will help you sort them out later. If self conscious just tell your guide that’s what you are doing. But, the websites have lots of pics too.

Two words: Google Earth.

It is imperative that you download this and explore the schools in question, and their surroundings, with a bird’s eye view in 3D.

I have and it is really cool but it makes me want to visit the school even more.

Here are aerial photos of St. Paul’s: http://mistoverfm.org/sps/aerials/</a> Click them and they enlarge. Maybe, just maybe, better than Google Earth.

SPS is gorgeous :)

I hate saying anything nice about taft but their campus is No 1 in my opioioin i was totalyl blown away it was like 100% like what i imagined hogwarts is like.

Why would you hate saying anything nice about Taft? It’s not a bad school…

I go to Hotchkiss, lol we are enemies I am totally joking of course.

Oh, okay :)

kent is very in the middle of nowhere, as is pomfret.

westminster is secluded, but it is in a fairly large town.
