Rush 2009

I figured I'd start this up ....

This is a question for girls currently in sororities.... for athletes who have excused absences for the first two days of rush (are missing it for MANDATORY winter training in other states) do you guys typically invite these girls back or automatically cut them... i'm really worried about this

What is the difference between business casual and business formal attire?

What are some good small talk questions to ask/talk about during rush?

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cornell-university/619068-mandatory-rush-week-meeting.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cornell-university/619068-mandatory-rush-week-meeting.html</a></p>

Girls with acceptable excuses for an absence are not penalized. I had a friend who missed out on Day 1 of Round 1 and was still called back to houses she never made it to. A girl in my rush group had a sport practice and had to leave....it wasn't a big deal. I went through a few days of rush...but dropped out...here is some info I remember that might help:

Round 1 attire is just nice jeans and nice top...nothing fancy. Round 2 and round 3 is a nice pair of slacks and a blouse or a simple dress. Preference round is formal...but not prom dress formal. I saw a lot of girls in short to mid-length semi-formal dresses. Keep in mind...it's often cold and snowing during rush. Most of the girls wore boots and changed their shoes once they arrived to the sorority house.

The sorority sister you talk to will often be the one to start and keep the conversation moving...for Rounds 1-3 conversations will be short and you'll talk to 3-4 sisters in a 20 minute period. Preference round can be awkward (or so I hear). You'll talk to one sister for 20-30 minutes. It's ok for you to ask questions as well. You can ask about why they chose their sorority, what it's like to live in the house, what the sisters do for fun, what the sister did over winter break....the only forbidden topics are the 3 B's: boys, booze and bids.

I've heard some houses do cut people who aren't at the first round, but I don't know if this is true. These are houses that are in higher demand and might not need to consider the people who missed a round to in order to get the kind of pledge class they want.

I'm sure policies have changed since I participated in rush...but each house has their own guidelines to follow.

I don't think that you will be cut after first round with a valid excuse. However, you really should not miss any of the later rounds, even with an excuse. There are so many girls who pass through, it is really easy for your name to slip through the cracks.
