Rush Week in January....How Exactly Does it Work?

Hey, I'm a frosh in CALS and i was wondering how rush week really worked?

From what I understand, we get back a week before class begins to attend Rush Week. But what exactly do we do once we return?

How do we find out which frats are holding events which day? And are we supposed to "rush" on our own, or do most people rush together with friends? I'm sure theres tons of us who are curious about how this all works at Cornell.

yes i am interested too...completely stoked...we have to arrive a week earlier to rush?

yeah, rush week begins before the week of class

oh, and what is "cross-rushing"?

i am assuming it is rushing for bids from more than one frat

well, what does it mean when, for example, "sig phi cross-rushes with SAE, DU, etc..."

does that mean they all take the same kids for rushing, to save time or something?

Basically you arrive a week before classes start and the night that rush begins (I think it's like a Tuesday this year but don't quote me) you'll have a meeting at like 7 pm where the main IFC guy will detail rush week (guys only, girls have their own separate meeting). Basically during the day you go around to different houses (usually with your group of friends) for smokers, which are just designated times during the day (two different times, one for houses on north and one for those on west) where you can go into any frat house and talk with the guys in the house. There are platters of food set out for you, which is a major plus, some places go all out. The frats will take your names and contact info, and at night there are "contacts," which is when teams of like 3-5 brothers from all the houses go around to the rooms (you have to be in your dorm room from like 7pm-9pm) of the guys they want to come back to the house. If you don't get a contact, you should probably not go back to that house. There are 3 rounds of contacts (3 different days), each one getting more exclusive. I think in the final one they offer you bids, I can't remember. At night there are usually parties in collegetown or something similar. A lot of houses have trips to Turningstone Casino or Paintballing or sake bombing or dinners, ways to get to know the rushes outside of parties. Most frats offer rides from at night to parties, but unless you're rushing with a friend of yours that has a car, you'll probably be walking during the day.

Some frats print out schedules of events and hand them out. Most will call you and tell you they have events that night.

Cross rushing refers to when two or more houses are "rushing" a guy (trying to get a guy to join a house).

And no I won't say which house I'm in that ruins the point of rush.

SORORITIES
Here is one girl's account of what rush week is like.
oh no she didn’t ? Classy and Fabulous: The Secret Life of Cornell Sororities.

I'll give you a brief overview of what its like.
Rush week for girls is NOT fun. However, pledging for two months is really fun because you guys get showered in gifts from your big sister and go to mixers and get free alcohol. Rush week runs from Tuesday-Sunday. It's from about 8AM to 8PM each day and its cold so be ready. I've talked to a lot of girls about this and my girlfriend and it goes something liek this:
Day 1 Tues- pretty casual and you go around and visit all 12 houses. wear a nice top and nice dark jeans. you will do A LOT of talking and hear A LOT of screaming when you enter the houses. you will also drink a lot of hot chocolate
Day 2 Wed- same as day 1
Day 3 Thurs- business casual; black pants and nice top. You start eliminating houses and houses start eliminating you. I think you get down to 9 houses. If you cut a house and they want you back then you have to go back or some **** like that.
Day 4 Fri- nicer and dressier. nice skirt and nice top and jewelry. you cut down to 6 houses.
Day 5 Sat- formal. wear a dress and jewelry. you cut down to 3 houses.
Day 6 Sunday- BID Night. You get and sign a bid for one sorority. They give you a t-shirt with some pun or catchy slogan or something like that.
You then go to mixers every single day (no joke) for the next two weeks. Then you have mixers like 3x a week for the next three months. Then Slope Day comes and you do a mixer with one fraternity and you get sloppy drunk. And that's your wonderful spring semester.

FRATERNITIES
Tuesday- 12-3PM and 3PM-6PM. Guys go around to each fraternity to what is known as a "smoker". North campus frats do 12-3PM and West campus houses do 3PM-6PM, and it goes vice versa each day. Smokers are just brothers sitting around. They'll come up to you and talk to you and you go around and talk to them and eat food. They will be house tours and you'll play pool and foosball a lot. Then you leave and repeat at other houses. Each house makes you sign in and takes your name, dorm room, and other random info. Then at night time (9 or 10PM) each fraternity does a night event. It could be strippers or international beers or a mini party or a case race or hpt tub party with girls. You get sloppy drunk and go back to North.

Wednesday- exactly the same as tuesday. However, at 8PM, brothers from houses that liked you will come visit you for what is known as "contacts." DUring contacts, you can ask questions and they can ask you questions. You CAN NOT leave your room or go with a fraternity from 8PM-10PM, because its considered dirty rushing.

Thursday- same as tuesday

Friday- Same as Wednesday and a second round of "contacts." By this point you should be down to 1-3 houses that you really like. If a house didn't visit you this day during contacts then they probably don't want you and you should look elsewhere. The fraternities that visit you during contacts this day will probably invite you to a CLOSED event at their house with the othe guys they expect to give bids to. You will get really drunk again.

Saturday- no scheduled events. you will probabl get invited to another CLOSED event from a frat that wants you.

Sunday- Bids are dropped from 4PM-6PM in your rooms. A frat will come in and give you your bid (an invitation to join their house) and will then invite you to dinner that night. You CAN get more than one bid from different houses.

Monday- you finally get to rest and go to class

Tuesday- you sign your bid of choice at willard straight hall.
You then have mixers about 1-4x a week depending on your house. You will start pledging and it WILL SUCK. You will be intiated sometime after spring break but before Slope Day. Then Slope Day comes and you celebrate being a brother.

"Cross-rushing" means that the type of guys who look at house X will also be looking at house Y. For example, the guys who are rushing Chi Phi will most likely also be rushing DU and FIJI, because all three are similar houses.

so is "formal" attire like a nice cocktail dress? then what do we wear on bid night? should i have 2 different "formal" dresses?

yes formal attire is essentially like a nice cocktail dress. on bid night you wear jeans and casual regular clothes. they'll give you a t-shirt to change into when you get to your final house.

can girls get more than one bid?

nope, girls can only get one bid. you will receive your bids at about 5:30 on bid day, with a note from the sorority youve gotten a bid from telling you where to meet your pledge class (i.e. donlon circle, rpu, appel, etc.) and then everyone does their own thing with their respective houses. bid day activities vary from house to house...its up to whatever the house has planned.

girls can't get multiple bids, but you are guaranteed a bid if you follow the rules (do not suicide). this could be good or bad, depending on where you final round.

this would surely be a timely topic

how do guys have to dress?

QUOTE: “how do guys have to dress?”

Guys don’t really have a dress code. Go with what you are comfortable with.

can juniors rush frats?

Is there any web site that describes the different frats at Cornell and their rush policies?
Thanks.
