Rushing and the Greek System

People of the Greek System at UCSD. Can you tell me what to expect when I rush and pledge? I also would like to know what kind of activities sororities do, just in general because I know that they are all different. Are events mandatory? Do they often take time on the weekend?

i wouldnt think the events would be mandatory, but it would be kinda dumb to join a sorority and not get involved in it… thats just a waste of money and waste of ur time rushing ._.

Some events are mandatory, others are not, and some do take place on weekends. For most sororities, philanthropic and special chapter events are mandatory (such as any community service work, recruitment, founders day, initiation, chapter meetings, etc.). Social events are not mandatory. You do pay dues to provide for the social events and they’re a lot of fun, so it’s good to go to as many as possible. And yeah, agreed with the previous poster - you’ll get out of a sorority what you put in. If you never go to anything, you won’t like it very much.

Go to [University of California - San Diego, PHC](http://www.panhellenicucsd.org) for more information about the recruitment process itself. New members usually have to attend both chapter meetings and new member meetings for their first quarter.

hazing…

and don’t anyone tell me it doesn’t happen, I’ve walked in on all of my greek suitemates talking about the **** that they had to go through.

So they do haze new members? The fraternities site says that all the organizations agreed to not haze though…

PHC sororities DO NOT haze. Not even slightly. I have friends in most of the 9 chapters and I can say with confidence that no new members get hazed.

IFC fraternities haze slightly, some are worse than others. usually pledges have to be sober drivers, etc. Nothing horrible.

Asian fraternities and sororities both haze heavily. It’s really unfortunate but that’s just how they’re run, like you bond more with your sisters or brothers when you’re put through that (that’s their mindset).
