Hi all! I will be attending NU in the fall, and I am considering joining a sorority. I know that rushing doesn't take place until the winter, but I'm curious as to how the process works. Can someone give me an overview of what the process is like? Thanks!

You will be assigned a rush counselor, who is someone who temporarily disaffiliates from her sorority and will “manage” (for lack of a better term) a group of potential rushees from your dorm (so if you live in a large dorm like Allison or Willard, there may be several rush counselors – if you are in a small one like the MidQuads, there may be one rush counselor who has several small dorms). As a group, you will go to first set parties - where you meet all of the houses. After that, you indicate which houses you liked most and the houses do the same. Then you get invited back to second set, where you are there for a longer period of time. Same process, then you have informals, which is a time period where the houses are open and you drop in as you desire to chat with the girls. Then there is the last set, called preference parties - at this point you are down to 3 houses.

The biggest thing that I cannot overemphasize is KEEP AN OPEN MIND. Do not decide upfront you “have to be a Kappa or a Tri Delt or a Theta” or whatever, and accept AS MANY INVITATIONS AS YOU CAN BACK. (In other words, “fill up” to the maximum.)

If your mother / family has friends who were in sororities, you may wish to ask them to write you recommendations (they will know how to do so), but it is not at all mandatory. This isn’t like a Southern school or a high-rush-intensive-school.

Treat it as an opportunity to meet new people, and have fun and good luck.

That was very helpful–thank you!
