So I’m going to Ru camden for nursing. I’m not from the area; I grew up in a safe area and people are freaking out about me going to camden. Now I am too. Great.
How dangerous is it? Tips to be safe? Where not to go or do? It’s going to be a huge shift for me-- hows the neighborhood?
I am from a NJ town about 15-20 minutes outside Camden. I wouldn’t go off campus, and I really don’t think there would be anything appealing in town. However, the waterfront has a concert stadium & aquarium. Also a ferry which can take you to Philly (there are nice & also not so nice areas there ). Camden is a tough city. My D was also accepted, but since we are so close, she would of commuted. Rutgers offers trips, I believe I saw something about either on the website, or in the acceptance package.
There is also a strong police presence.
Maybe take a look on google street maps…
@Liebegilly I have friends who are active on that campus (greek life advisors) and they say the student body is awesome. I assume they have given you a great deal financially. I’d figure out how to get into Philly for social life outside of school.
I have friends who went and kids of friends currently commuting to Rutgers Camden. They always feel safe. You can check this site for some statistics - they are a few years old, but it appears the housing is very safe. https://ope.ed.gov/campussafety/#/institution/search
If you read up on student review websites, most say as long as you stay on campus you will feel safe.
Parts of the City of Camden itself are not that safe. It’s important not to just wonder into town into unknown areas. You will run into poverty/robbery/drugs/etc if you wonder into unknown areas. I would think they would teach you basic rules and give advice during orientation and you will also quickly learn from your peers that grew up in NJ. There is a strong police presence in and around the college campus and as mamabear said, the areas around the waterfront, aquarium and stadium for concerts are quite nice and safe. We’ve traveled there on occasion for a nice day out.
@Fishnlines29 I’m from the suburbs near new brunswick. I’ve visited once on a weekend and it was so so quiet. Barely any life was outside and I didn’t like the feeling I got from it. Unless that was just crappy timing on my part. It wasn’t a good first impression
My daughter was accepted to Rutgers Camden with an $8,000 scholarship but I am hearing how unsafe an area it is and have eliminated it as a possibility because of this. Wondering if we made the right decision. She did not receive a penny from New Brunswick nor Newark.
