And here I thought the leaders of our country came from their mommies’ tummies.

Speaking of mommies, that is the mother of all correlation = causation fallacies. I don’t doubt that certain universities and the fraternities within them are strongly connected to power and influence in this country, but I do strongly doubt that this is because of any inherent virtues in the fraternity experience itself.

This is kind of surprising, considering that SG Rho is known as the sorority for quiet/Christian girls. However, they are AKA and Delta rejects, so they already have some type of inferiority complex. It speaks volumes about a person who is willing to subject themselves to this type of torture. You have to feel sorry for people who need to pay people to be their “friends” and willing to get humiliated and beaten, just to fit in and get some letters.

Greeks pride themselves in being “leaders.” How are you being a “leader” when you allow yourself to get beaten, humiliated, and have your individual identity stripped to be “made” into an image fitting for the sorority/fraternity?!

As for the branding, only Ques and Sigmas brand…

“Weird. Usually sorority hazing involves buying gifts for each other. Guess the Rutgers chapter didn’t get the memo.”

That’s only in white sororities…

Was the sorority in question a historically black sorority? I didn’t catch that in the article, but then again I just glanced at it.

Yup it’s a historically black sorority. Was going to mention that also way before but figured someone would pull out the racist card on me if I said something along the lines like that.

“I think it’s odd that there were only 6 active members. Makes me doubt that they ever went thru this themselves. After all, what did the original group do, beat themselves? Beat each other?”

It’s Sigma Gamma Rho - 6 active members in a chapter is a lot for them! Who wants to be a Rho when you can be an AKA or a Delta?! lmao The original group probably were brought over by alumni or a grad chapter…

something tells me this wouldn’t be news if it was a frat

DukeAlumnus, there are “white fraternities” whose members display brands, usually discretely.

And I, too am surprised it was SGR, a sorority that prides itself on not being campus prom queens but smart and somewhat traditional women who don’t follow the crowd.

Meant to say ‘conservative women’ rather than ‘traditional.’

Oh my goodness, I was in New Brunswick a few days ago (a Rutgers campus) to get Coldstone ice cream and the lady who worked there was talking about sorority beatings with another guy. I didn’t know what she was talking about at the time but now I do. How terrible. :(

Oh and the Coldstone is on the ground floor of Rockoff Hall where the beatings were.
