Rutgers Honors College

Hi. Does anyone know what the pros and cons are of accepting an honors college invitation at Rutgers after freshman year? Intended major CS. Thanks.

Unless something has changed this year, I didn’t think they accepted students into the honors college after freshman year?

ETA: that still seems to be the case as per:

My son tells me he got an invitation. I think this may be different than the honors college that you get accepted at after high school. I am not sure.

Perhaps it’s an invitation to an honors program?

There is the honors college and there are honors programs.

Yes, it is the honors program. Not the college. I just saw the actual email. So is it worthwhile accepting it?

Thanks.

In my observation, Honors College and Departmental Honors are considered prestigious. The SAS Honors program, not as much. It requires extra work but don’t think it provides any particular benefits. Check out the CS departmental honors, which I believe is junior and senior year. That requires research and a thesis if I am not mistaken. That means more to potential employers and grad schools than the general honors program. Some might say, it’s even more meaningful than being in honors college your first two years (i.e. recognition based on your college record vs your high school record).
