Rutgers honors engineering (pres scholarship) vs Carnegie Mellon Engineering

I've been admitted to both of these schools and I'm finding it difficult to make a decision. At Rutgers, I'll be able to get a free education with all of the perks of the honors program. However, CMU is much more renowned for its engineering program and it has a small school atmosphere which I like. But, the difference in cost will be somewhere in the order of $200,000 over four years, and although my family will not be burdened by this too much, it is a significant difference. So, what do you guys think I should choose? Is a CMU degree in engineering worth this difference in cost? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Post your question on the Engineering forum as well. You might get more specific advice.

200k vs free. I know my answer, as a parent. How much do you want to go to Carnegie Mellon? Have you visited the campus?

200k is a lot of money.

Many top students will choose a substantial scholarship at Rutgers vs an expensive, top-rated private school. And then some will choose to pay full price at the private; it’s a very personal decision. Do you plan on going to grad school? That’s something else to consider.

I don’t know how much others can help you with your decision, because people value things differently. Growing up, I struggled financially, so I tend to be very conservative with my financial decisions and advise my kids accordingly. If you are not paying 200k tuition, you can spend money on other things you might need: a car to get to a job or internship, international travel, extra courses during breaks, whatever. It’s nice to know that you have money in the bank.

If it’s your dream school, and you love the campus, and your parents have no problem paying, it’s an easy decision. But if those things don’t apply, I might not pay 200k just for a name.

I agree with Rualum!! If money is not an issue, I say go to CM. They have an excellent engineering program and I hear people are happy there. My good friend’s daughter goes there and she loves it even though it was not her top choice. Not everyone can attend or be accepted to elite schools and if one is given the opportunity to attend, I don’t think he/she should turn it down unless it is for financial reasons. You will meet different people from all over the States at CM, unlike Rutgers where most of their students come from NJ. If your parents are Ok with paying $200,000 and you love the school, I say you should go for it. Good luck!!
