I just completed my fist semester at Rutgers and the experience was amazing! Next semester I decided to move on campus because traveling back and forth was not working for me. I received a notification e-mail in regards to the lottery process, however, I'm not sure weather or not the application is ONLY for students who are applying in groups? Will someone elaborate more on that?
Thanks!

The application is to enter the lottery. When the lottery happens, you’ll get assigned a number. The lower it is, the better. Last year it went from 1-10,000.

After you get your number, you decide what kind of housing you want to apply for. Last year singles picked first, then suites, then apartments, then doubles. If you get a really good number and want a suite or apartment it should be easy to find roommates (the group picks by lowest number) or you can decide to go for a single.

If you do not get your first choice, you can apply for the next choice in the next round, until the end. If you don’t get something, you’ll either be put on a waiting list or added to another group. I think everyone who wanted it got housing last year.

To sign up for an apartment or suite, you need to list all of your roommates names on the application form during that particular selection period.

I know that people are randomly assigned sometimes, but I’m not sure how that works. I would guess that if you don’t get your first housing choice, you go on a wait list, and then you are assigned as spots become available (people drop out, change their mind, etc).

btw it’s only a problem if you get a higher housing lottery number. If you get anything below 1000, everyone will want to be your roommate because you will get first pick of most of the housing.

Group Size - Rather than only allowing groups of four or six in apartments and suites, students in groups of two, four or six will be allowed to choose an apartment or suite. If they are not filling the apartment or suite however, their choice will be limited to an apartment or suite that has not been filled to capacity in the same complex. (e.g. a group of two students eligible to sign into Richardson apartments, will be allowed to sign into an empty apartment only if there is no Richardson apartment with two students signed in and two vacancies. If there is an apartment with two vacancies, they will be limited to choosing only that apartment.) This limitation will prevent many apartments and suites from being partially filled and thus shutting out groups of four and six. This year we will try this with groups of two; and consider other configurations in future years if it is successful.

Housing is for 2 semesters. Some of the apartments such as Rockoff have an option for a longer term (eg 12 month contract includes 2 semesters and breaks). See the housing webpage to see the prices of all the housing.
