I was wondering if it would be easier getting accepted to Rutgers NB if I got a letter of recommendation from a super visor from Rutgers Newark and did a Ecology research project with PhD students funded by Rutgers.

No, it makes NO DIFFERENCE whatsoever. At this point, Rutgers only looks at your school ranking (or GPA) and your SAT score. People who tell you otherwise aren’t informed. Rutgers, however, does take your extracurricular TO SOME DEGREE. If your GPA and SAT/ACT aren’t very impressive, any amazing extracurricular won’t do anything for you, however.

There will be some people who tell others that if they have horrible GPA and test scores, they can simply make it up to “increase the chance” of being accept by engaging in more and impressive extracurricular. Unfortunately, that’s a pile of crap, and the real world doesn’t work like that. Think of your admission process to Rutgers as jumping over hurdles.

The first hurdle is your GPA. If you don’t pass the first one and get tripped over, you obviously can’t jump over the second hurdle. If you get tripped over the second hurdle, which is your test score, you can’t jump over the third hurdle: extracurricular.

Extracurricular will only help you if all your basics are met, but letters of recommendations wise, it will make NO DIFFERENCE. I got 3 letters of rec, and they did nothing.

What I’ve been told and come to believe based on a very large sample of anecdotal evidence is Rutgers NB takes your percentile rank and your SAT and projects what your GPA would be based on past students with similar scores. If its above 2.5 you’re autoaccepted, if its below 2.0 you’re auto rejected and if it falls somewhere in between then they’ll look at your other stuff (SAT II’s, AP’s, scholastic involvement). This next part is conjecture but I think all they’re looking for is a reasonable assurance that you won’t flunk out, I doubt your rec’s will come into play.

@needsmorsleep,

Uh…no; that is not true at all. The average GPA for incoming freshmen last year was 3.56, and it was even a bit higher this year. A source also informed me that the admission standard for Rutgers is getting higher and higher each year. Referring to the 2009 - 2010 graph provided by Naviance, approximately 75% of the applicants with less than 3.0 GPA got flat out rejected.

As for the recommendation letter wise, I believe Rutgers will definitely require letters from teachers near in the future especially if you are applying for a specific program at Rutgers such as pharmacy or engineering. Rutgers also required students to write essays this year; if I had been told correctly, this didn’t exist for the class of 2014 when they applied a year back.

I think you’ve misunderstood me, these are projected gpa’s for your freshman year at rutgers not hs gpa’s.

So for example, lets say Billy comes out of hs with a 2220 and 4.3w; rutgers will make their admission decision by looking at students at Rutgers who have just finished their first year and had similar scores as Billy coming in. If these students have an average Rutgers gpa of over 3.0 (or something similar, I don’t know the cutoff and it would have to be adjusted based on the number of spots open vs the number of applicants), billy is accepted. If it’s under 2.0 (or smt similar) hes rejected and if its in between they’ll look at his additional stuff (like the required essay or letters of rec but I’ve conjectured they these are relatively small factors and will only save you if you’re close in the first place.)

You’re right though, it wouldn’t make any sense at all the way you understood it

Thanks for the info. 'preciate it.
