I know Rutgers is the state university of NJ and about 90% are NJ residents and I hear that it's a suitcase college where most kids go home during the weekends. I'm oos and if I go, will I feel isolated? Is Rutgers just a hs reunion for NJ kids? And where are most oos kids from, the northeast? Thanks =)

I am not a Rutgers student, but one of my best friends is and I visit her there a lot considering it is about 15 minutes from my house. It is a suitcase college and a lot of kids go home every weekend, but by no means will it be empty. My friend has only been home for Thanksgiving and Christmas thus far and her roommate is oos. From the people I have met most oos are either from NY or PA, but there are ppl from just about everywhere.

yea--- kids go home but it definately does not empty out... in my dorm at least by far the majority stays here.

RU is 20 minutes away from home for me...I really hope that the dorms do NOT empty out over the weekends because I plan to spend all my time there (freedom & away from home!) and GOD do I hope it will not be a HS reunion for us NJ kids...can't stand that thought.

DS is from Boston area and has been accepted - has not decided for sure yet, but likes Rutgers. DOes anyone know what the actual percentage of oos kids is?

i think it is less than 10% - but i'm not definite.

i think it is less than 10% - but i'm not definite.

This is a quote from an article in the Daily Targum (RU's school newspaper).

"If the proportion of out-of-state students at a university indicates nationwide attractiveness, Rutgers does not fare very well in that area.

When compared to other high caliber state universities, Rutgers's out-of-state population, 9.4 percent, is small. Thirty-four percent of students at the University of Virginia come from outside of Virginia, and 33 percent of the University of Michigan's student body hails from outside of Michigan."
