Rutgers Mason Gross

Hi,

My T got accepted to Rutgers Mason Gross for Theater Design, also to Drew. She was deferred EA at Emerson. Still waiting to hear from Purchase, Ithaca, Wagner, Muhlenberg.

Does anyone have any opinions on Mason Gross?
Thanks,

I have heard it is very good.

Good, selective program at a bargain cost.
Our son was accepted last year but decided against (instrumental music).

Mason Gross is part of Rutgers and there are some issues with Rutgers that can be difficult: the school is very large; the New Brunswick campus is sprawling and requires buses between classes; there is insufficient housing for all who want it.
None of these are unique to Rutgers but they are what they are.

M-G has many profs that are 'real life' professionals in their field and it has a good reputation in NJ.

Just curious, where did your son end up going and is he happy?

Our son is at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and is very happy.

He auditioned unsuccessfully at his first choice conservatory in NYC. When he weighed his options last April, TCNJ came out on top for him.
Mostly it was a strong connection to the instrumental prof there who he had worked with the previous summer at Governor's school. Many others on the forums here have pointed out the importance of a 'fit' with an instrumental music instructor and this was key for our son.
His other school choices each had strong points for him to consider, including a large merit award from the Hartt school.

TCNJ also offers strong academics, small classes, a beautiful campus and a bunch of motivated, focused kids to hang out with. Our son is enjoying some of the writing and history classes more than he thought he would!
He may pursue a graduate degree at a conservatory.

I would have liked my daughter to apply there, but she is interested in Theatrical Lighting and Design and they do not have a major in that. I would like my younger daughter to apply there for business. Glad that your son is doing so well.

Mason Gross has some excellent faculty, and some very generous merit scholarships available. The overall quality and reputation of the school is certainly not on a par with major conservatories, but you can get a very good education there.

My friend's D was accepted ED to Muhlenberg. She will study costume design.
They loved the school when they visited.

T applied there also, but we have not been there to see it. I hear good things about it. They don't interview for design there. At this moment she is at Wagner waiting for her tour and interview.
