Rutgers NB Nursing? OOS student

I’m a parent. DS got accepted to NB Nursing and Psychology majors. We are from CA and he applied because I wanted him to have some OOS options. He wants to stay in CA but won’t hear back from UC’s until later. We have not visited any schools. I know, we should have earlier. But plan to visit his top 2-3 when he gets accepted.

So what I’m wondering is how is Rutgers for OOS students? Do you have to travel by bus to go to classes? Or is it a walking campus.

What’s the campus feel like…is it a commuter environment and people leave on the weekends/breaks? What is the Nursing program like compared to other programs you may be looking at? PRO’s vs CON’s

TIA
K

Hi! My daughter was accepted to Nursing as well. We are in state, but I’ll try to answer as best I can having visited Rutgers. We loved it and it is most likely where she will end up. To be honest, I expected to hate it. I thought it would be too big and overwhelming.

The best way I can describe it is a cluster of small colleges. There is transit from campus to campus. There is an app for the transit and, from what I understand, it is very easy to use and navigate the system. Each campus has a small school feel to it and they are all very different. Some are more isolated, some are more part of New Brunswick or close to a second campus. The student can design their experience to spend most of their time on one campus or select classes all over. How they design their experience is up to them. Once on a campus, you can easily get around on foot.

The one thing that has really sold me on Rutgers is, because of what I’ve already described, I feel that even if she is unhappy her first year, she can completely redesign her experience without transferring to a different school. She can move to a different campus, change to a million different majors, find a ton of new activities.

For my theatre loving girl, we loved that the State Theatre Of NJ was right there practically on campus. And RWJ Hospital is also there, so I wouldn’t have to worry about her driving to clinicals. There is a NJ transit train stop with easy access to NYC, Newark International, and home sweet home. We actually went to NY to see a couple of Broadway shows this week and when we stopped at Rutgers, I told her it would still be so easy for us to do that together and I could just meet her on the way!

Our only drawback to Rutgers is that so many kids from high school go there, but at the same time, with so many different campuses, she may never run into them.

I hope this helped a little, I’m sure it’s a suitcase school to some extent, but with so much to do there, I’m sure plenty will stay. My son goes to Rutgers in Camden. Now that’s a total suitcase school, but he still finds plenty to do and never seems to want to come home himself lol.

Sorry forgot about the program - it’s a decent program. Second only to TCNJ in NJ and ranked pretty well nation wide.

Thank you for the information. I agree we won’t really know what it is like until we see it. We found out he got into the Honors College Camden too. We are waiting to hear what Merit aid he will get.
