I got into both and am having a hard time picking between the two. So far, I got a full ride to monmouth, but didn't hear about financial aid from rutgers yet. I'm going to join the ranks of pre-meds out there, and want to hear any, i mean any, opinions that can help me make this decision. I live like 5 minutes away from monmouth, but almost an hour away from rutgers, from where i will commute. oh yea, if any of you have made this decision, i would appreciate your take on why you chose what you chose.

thanks

Although Rutgers is good, not taking the full ride at Monmouth would be ridiculous. Is money an issue for you?

Well if money is a serious issue then i guess go with Monmouth, but Rutgers has a really good program for premed students. there is a lot of programs like HPO and ODASIS which help u make out ur schedule and study time to suceed in your pre-med courses. Rutgers also has joint programs with medical schools like UMDNJ, RWJ, and Drextel. They also have a a pretty high percentage of their pre-med going onto medical schools. Some of the medical schools that students have been accepted are really good like Columbia, NYU mount sinai, & Harvard. I’m not familiar with Monmouth’s pre-med programs but Rutgers is really known for them. btw im on the same path a high school senior i went to the open house last Sat. so that’s how i know all this information.

I’m trying to make the exact same decision right now. I find out my decision from Monmouth tomorrow though. I’d really love to go to Monmouth though, but its like $25,000 a year. I am choosing Monmouth because of smaller class sizes, and the fact that I am doing Marine Biology and they have a good (and fun) program for that.

Can I ask you what your “free ride” is based on? So that I can have an idea of how much aid I might get? Like can you break it down for me what exactly you’re getting money for, if you know? Thanks in advance.

I should be getting $5,000 for transferring to a science program with an A.A., some merit aid, and hopefully anything else I can get.

the reason its such a tough decision is that i could have gone to a more prestigous school for like no scholarship, something i cant really afford seeing as my parents make about 20k.
thats why money is a huge issue for me haha.

and PyroKaos, how much aid does rutgers tend to give, if you got your letter and what not…

marinebi0, for my financial aid from monmouth i got:
14k for academic excellence scholarship
5550 for pell grant
750 for academic competitiveness grant
11k for nj tuition aid grant

i will commute so this makes me and my parents happy if i choose to go there.
but the real dilemma lies in the choice.

rutgers has a bigger name and gives its undergrads a slight edge over those other undergrads that come from small colleges like monmouth especially if u end up applying to top tier medical schools like duke and harvard, which i want to do.

but monmouth has smaller class sizes and different programs etc…

still, any other additives to this list of rutgers vs monmouth would be greatly appreciated

If your applying premed and have a free ride at monmouth and feel like you can excel there, by all means go there. But Rutgers does have a better name and if your in state, its really not that costly. But you want the least amount of debt as possible when applying to med school, a high GPA matters the most, with good ECs

well you if you are in state and your parents make 20K a year then you should easily be able to get enough aid to cover the whole tuition. Look into rutgers EOF because i think u qualify and if your grades and rank were high in high school you should also get some scholarship money. my situation is like yours and i got an initial offer of 21K with out loans it came out to 16K and im commuting.
