I posted this for Amherst but after going to visit I dont think the college is for me so here is the same thing for Rutgers

I'm trying to transfer from my community college in MD to Rutgers: New Brunswick this fall. My college stats are...well...bad. My mother past away last semester and it really took a toll on my GPA dealing with the funeral and losing her. I included this in the 'explain any extra information section' But here are the stats I have if anyone can help me just see my chances (though I'm sure they are slim, lol)

College GPA: 1.93
HS GPA: 3.4 weighted
ACT score: 28
HS president if red cross for 3 years, editor of year book for 3 years, captain of soccer team and tennis for 1 year, student body president for 1 year and vice for one year.

Also, in my essay I explained that 'even though there was a death, it was my own responsibility for doing poorly, no one elses' so i was honest.

Anyone have any idea of what they might say? or is it a hit or miss?

Your not going to get in with that GPA. I would say if you can stay at the community college and do well and apply next year you would have a good chance.

Thanks for being honest!

But I called them today and talked to an admissions counselor and they said they have no gpa requirement for transfer, they look at everyone as a whole and since i have less than 60 credits my high school record will weigh just as heavy if not slightly more than my college gpa, so…was applying a waste of my time?

There is no requirement, but honestly I think you have like a 1% chance of getting in. I’ve never heard of anyone getting in below a 2.5 while most people have at least a 3.0. I think if you took more classes and got all A/Bs and got your gpa to at least 2.5 they would see the upward trend and you would have a good chance.

How many credits do you have?

I took 20 or so during HS time and so far, since graduating ive taken 11 so 31.

But thank you for that advice :)

Alright so it’s not like you have to transfer. I would go to CC for one more year, get an associates, then transfer if I were you.
