So I was recently accepted into Rutgers- New Brunswick into their school of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Business School. I have a 89.4 UW gpa and a 1310 SAT (700M/610R/W). The only thing that worries me is that I do not think I would be able to afford to go to Rutgers. I wanted to know if they give good merit and financial aid to out of state students. The most I would be able to pay is 30-35k a year. The cost of attendance for students from out of state is approximately 48k. My EFC from the FAFSA is roughly 23k for reference. What are my chances of getting at least 15k-20k in financial aid/scholarships? Is Rutgers known for giving good aid to out of state students? I am from New York.
Did you get a financial award with your acceptance letter? It would have been explicitly stated. I’m not sure, but most state universities save all of their financial aid for in-state students.
When did you hear back from Rutgers?
Sorry, but your chances of getting a merit scholarship that will be essential the equivalent of the $30k full tuition (which is what you would need in order for your family to just pay their EFC to send you to Rutgers) is none.
Remember, Rutgers is ** the State University of NJ**. Their goal is to provide an affordable educational option for their in-state taxpayer base, which you and your family are not part of.
If by your moniker, you are indeed from NYS then your affordable option for your FAFSA 23K EFC is SUNY (if you are looking to dorm) or CUNY if you live in NYC. I really hope that you have applied to some SUNY/CUNY schools. IF you have not, please do so ASAP so that you are not left with out any financially feasible options.
As a potential stem person, what is your ranking at your school? If you are in the top 10% at your school, you will be eligible to obtain a STEM scholarship that covers full tuition at SUNY/CUNY making SUNY an affordable option for your family.
@sgopal2 , they do not give their financial aid award letter until early February.
@m22499 they released the first batch of decisions on tuesday night , but i didnt check until Wednesday morning.
@sybbie719 yeah i get my chances of getting good aid at rutgers is slim, i just really loved the campus and atmosphere. Also, I believe Rutgers has a better CS program than any SUNY, (could be argued Stony Brook is better). Also, yeah i applied to 5 SUNY’s got accepted to UAlbany. New Paltz, and Purchase, still waiting on Binghamton and Stony Brook.
spoken like a 17 year old with no real world experience. As long as you are attending an accredited ABET program, you will be able to work as an engineer.
You need to learn how to love Albany (unless you get an acceptance from Bing/Stony Brook). Don’t sleep on City College who has really stepped their CS program
@sybbie719 is right. You’re a young person who doesn’t really understand that those SUNY CS programs are more than good enough. No need to be paying more.
What are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay each year?
Rutgers isn’t likely going to give you much/any merit or FA. You can have your parents run their net price calculator and see.
