Hi. I am a senior in high school and was admitted into the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. There is a very good chance I will attend. I understand that they only take 8 AP Credits, and that it's best to use them on Biology or Chemistry which, because they are lab courses, use up the full 8 credits. By the end of this year, I will have taken:

AP English Language & Composition
AP Calculus AB
AP Spanish Language
AP Psychology
AP Biology

I plan on using my 8 credits for Biology, as most people seem to agree that that is the best thing to do. However, I was wondering if there was ANY benefit to even taking the other tests. I took AP English last year and got a 4 but is there any benefit to me even bothering to take the other AP tests if I know I am going to Rutgers and can only use the Bio credits? I read something about being exempt from the math placement test if you have a 5 in AP Calc but that may only be BC. I also read something about being able to register for classes sooner if you have more credits, which I technically would if I scored well on my AP tests even if I can't actually use them to get out of taking a class. Is any of this true? Should I bother taking them? I have to sign up to take them soon so that's why I'm asking.

You are not exempt from the placement test for getting 5 on the AP CALC exam, AB or BC. If you took the class, you might as well take the AP test. My school requires you to take the AP test or take the class final so it’s really a no brainer which is going to be easier.

And no, as far as I know, taking a lot of APs does not let you register early…where did you get that from? Taking an AP class does not equal credits…

Even if you place out of Bio, you don’t get the credits. You take another class, usually Psych, in its place. You just remove it off your requirements.

“Rutgers doesn’t make your schedule except for 1st year 1st semester. You have to wait your turn in the most annoying registration system webreg which allows you to register based on # of credits. This means if you have AP credits you’ll register ahead of your classmates which allows you to get the better sections/times.”

Yes, you will get the 8 credits from bio. You will be a little better off than people who came in with no AP credits at all come time for registration (I remember them panicking because the people with AP Bio credit and such had taken a lot of the class spots, and some of them wound up with highly undesirable schedules because of it). However, registering for classes is still relatively stressful, especially since 8 credits is still pretty little and you won’t be as competitive if you’re trying to get a popular class as an elective or something like that. I lucked out and got what I wanted with no problem, but some people had to fight for special permission numbers and such.

I believe that you still have to take the math placement test regardless of whether you took AP Calc – I took AP Calc and still had to take the test, and I don’t know anyone who was exempted. Unless one of your teachers has some policy where if you don’t take the AP test, you have to take the final, I think that it’s unnecessary to take any AP tests besides bio.
