So, I just became aware of placement testing for freshman as well... does anyone know when they are and how difficult they are? I also heard that there are exemptions... any enlightenment on that subject?

Check your enrollment pathway; there will be several test date choices available. If you are in a specific school, say business or engineering, they may suggest you take your test by a certain date.

Difficulty? This is a very large school which admits many applicants with varying levels of experience so your answer will be different depending on whom you ask. If you don’t make it into Calc I or Expos, you will simply be placed in Precalc or Basic Comp first. Not a big deal.

I don’t know about exemptions from the math or english placement tests, but you do not need to take the foreign language portion if you will not be taking a language.

Exemptions:
Rutgers- New Brunswick: You need a 600 Verbal SAT score to be exempted from the English portion and automatically placed in Expos 1. Calc BC exam score of 4 or 5 places you out of Calc 1 and 2. Calc AB exam score of 4 or 5 places you out of Calc 1.
Rutgers- Newark: You need a 550 Verbal SAT score to be exempted from the english portion and automatically placed in English Composition 1. Calc BC exam score of 4 or 5 places you out of Calc 1 and 2. Calc AB exam score of 4 or 5 places you out of Calc 1.

The test doesn’t seem difficult. There are some Pre-Calc/Trig stuff on it and Logs…

I also think First-year students who score a “4” or “5” on the AP English Composition Exam are exempted and automatically placed in English 3 or something. Correct me if I’m wrong

hmm gotcha

about the foreign language comment… are we required by Rutgers (New Brunswick) to take a foreign language as a part of our schedule?
and I think I’ll do fine on the calc portion… I’m in a high level calculus right now so it shouldn’t be too difficult. I’ve heard there’s a few log expressions on there, and we haven’t been dealing with logs too much this year so I’m going to freshen up on that… I advise others that will take the test to do so as well.

I think certain majors need a foreign language requirement. Check the website just to make sure.

In some cases a language is required, so you will have to check on that.

My son only had up to precalc in high school and placed into Calc I.

Oh, then I should definitely be fine… as for foreign languages for majors, I’ll check, but I seriously doubt its a requirement for pre med majors hahah

So, I’m looking at the placement testing website because I just signed up… and it says:

“All School of Arts and Sciences students registered for testing must complete the Foreign Language testing immediately after the Level 2 math testing; the test day will end at 3:30 pm.”

WHAAAT? The test day starts at 8:15, and from what I’ve heard, the testing shouldn’t be that rigorous… Does this mean as a SAS student I’m required to decide on a language I want to take now and test on it right then?

This comes as a shock to me as I hadn’t even thought that SAS students would need to take a language.

You should also be aware that there are NO CALCULATORS allowed for any portion of the math test

Hi everybody!
Does anyone know what should I do in this situation?: I took the math portion of the placement test. I was exempt from the English portion because of my SAT score. But I forgot to take the foreign language test. I’m from SAS, and I totally forgot about it! I was a little sick that day, but I’m pretty sure I did well. Except for the fact that I didn’t stick around for the language test. What should I do?

I’m pretty sure that you have to take the foreign language part before they will place you in a foreign language class. SOE students can skip it because they don’t have to take a language, but if they do end up wanting to take a language, they have to take it first.

So what you will have to do is take it the next time it is offered. If it is not until next year, then you will not be allowed to take a foreign language class until you have completed the placement test.

So call the appropriate dept, explain your problem, and ask when the next test is.
