ACT:

GPA: 4.0 weighted
Rank: HS does not rank
State Residency: New Jersey

Decision date: 12/2020
Decision/College: Accepted/Engineering
Campus: New Brunswick
4 AP classes, 2 honors classes
Rutgers gave no merit money at all. My son has decided that Rowan University College of Engineering is a better fit for him, classes are smaller, engineering facilities are much newer, dorms are new and he works on 1 project every semester. They gave him a SUBSTANTIAL merit award. 1 year at Rutgers is what it will cost him to go to Rowan for 4.
I agree with you. My son was accepted to Rutgers Engineering School, New Brunswick. However, they gave him $0. We will be turning down the acceptance as well. He was accepted to Stevens Institute, NJIT and GWU–all of which gave him substantial merit money, but the net cost was still way too high. He just applied to Rowan University School of ENgineering three weeks ago; he was accepted and they awarded 1/2 tuition–so guess where he is going. He will end up spending in four years at Rowan what it will cost to attend Rutgers for one year. Plus, we live 7 miles from Rutgers–so it’s kind of like an extension of high school for him and he wants a change.
my son is declining his Engineering school offer as well–so there is 2 open spots
I do know that they wait-listed a lot of applications. I think they were waiting on whether they were going to open the campus’s back up again. And, as you know, they are now mandating the vaccine. I think, however, this mandate is going to backfire on them and a lot of students will be going elsewhere. But, I guess we will have to wait and see. My son is declining his acceptance to their Engineering School–it’s just too expensive. Rowan University gave him an offer we just can’t refuse.
I am going to guess a lot! It is my understanding they wait-listed most applicants due to the uncertainty of reopening the campus in the Fall. Now that they have mandated the vaccine, I can imagine many will be declining their acceptance. So, my guess is a lot more spots will be opening up. I know my son is declining his acceptance into the Engineering school and so are a few of his friends.
with test scores optional–all schools were inundated with applications. My son was accepted to Rutgers Engineering. They gave him no merit money-so the cost is a bit much. He will be declining his acceptance. I also think the vaccine mandate will open up more spots as well. Don’t get discouraged.
Rutgers is not that affordable. If you’re not in the top 1% you will be getting no merit aid. The net cost is approximately $35,000 (living on campus and meal plan). For instance, my son was accepted to the School of Engineering. He has a 1450 SAT, 4.0 GPA and several AP and Honor’s classes–Rutgers gave him $0; meaning we are responsible for the entire $35k. We declined. He just applied to Rowan’s School of Engineering and was accepted; they gave him 1/2 tuition in merit aid. His entire education at Rowan will cost the same as 1 year at Rutgers–its really a no-brainer.
I think this is a game-changer and for those still on the waitlist, my prediction is there will be a substantial admitted students declining, which may open up the waitlist
Wow that’s great about Rowan! NJIT was the best deal for mine at around 4-5K per year. Making it the same price to go for 4 years with room and board, as Rutgers tuition without room and board, for one year. He has decided he will not be attending school in NJ though.
My daughter had a 34ACT, 3.9 UGPA, 9 AP, the rest honors, nothing. Her friend who got into Cornell got $0 from Rutgers. That said, my oldest graduated RBS and had a great job offer by junior year.
Makes me wonder where all the merit $ is going. I’m 100% on board with my son choosing Rowan Engineering over Rutgers
My daughter got some merit and FA from Clemson, so she’s heading to warmth and in person classes. Her twin might go to Rutgers. I think one year our valedictorian got some merit (my daughter was friends with her). I think it mostly goes to OOS.
which is another reason why I am happy he chose Rowan-give to your own before you give to others!
My kids were OOS merit chasers, most schools give most to OOS as an incentive to not attend their in state flagship. However, based on threads here, most gave at least a few thousand to higher stat in state students. This is my fourth round college application process, so I knew not to expect anything. My son got $ from Montclair and Stockton, but Rutgers has a better business school.
(I am jellojillo15, got locked out of that account)
I think it depends on ur other options. I am considering Temple and Drexel which are both much more expensive than Drexel :((
also, how would the vaccine mandate open up more spots for waitlist people? waiting for sebs and sas here!
I got off of the waitlist for sas a couple of hours ago!!
