I’m a NJ senior who is choosing between these three schools. Rutgers is the cheapest, but only by a few thousand dollars, so the difference is not significant.
I’m an undecided major.
Which school is better academically? Which one is in a better area? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each school? Which one would you choose and why?
Wow congrats all great schools!
Binghampton has a great reputation. you would meet people from outside nj.
its upstate ny so you will get snow more often. upstate ny is beautiful
udel campus is beautiful. it will most likely give you a traditional college experience.
Prob the most social of schools.
Rutger has the name in the tri- state area for excellence in academics.
Campus is very big!
Rutgers is a great school. Can’t get either of my kids to look at it because of the bus system! But know tons of very happy students there.
Bing and U Del are also both great schools. My D prefers U Del because it has football, which to her gives it a more “traditional” college feel. I think Bing is probably the more highly rated, and has beautiful new dorms.
Binghamton is not beautiful. Upstate is but Bing is western NY and sadly this part of the state has been neglected and struggling for a long time. I’m sure you can find surrounding areas that are beautiful but IMO, college students are usually on campus and in the town/city of the school. The campus is modern and well maintained. This is the state’s premier university so while the city of Binghamton may be struggling, the state has been generous with money to this university. You will find New York’s best and brightest here. This is the hardest SUNY to get into. The SUNY system is filled with large numbers of students from downstate (NYC/Long Island/southern tier) because that is where the population density is in NYS. You will get a great education with a great value.
U of Del is a social school with an attractive campus. Is it worth the cost? IMHO, probably not.
Rugers…I don’t know enough about it to comment.
Congratulation! You have great options.
I’m also considering Rutgers, and while I don’t know too much about the other schools, and while I have not properly toured Rutgers I know that the NB campus is really big. Do class sizes vary that much between the schools you’re going to? Also, I know you’re undecided, but if there are any majors you’re interested in, you should look up the requirements to transfer into that major. I just learned that for CS you should have at least a C in prereq courses: https://www.cs.rutgers.edu/academics/undergraduate/admission-to-the-major
I’m biased towards Bing as my son attends. He loves it. The campus is not beautiful, but it’s not as ugly as people might lead you to believe. There are a lot of excellent dorms. My son likes the food. There’s a lovely nature preserve attached to campus. There are many gorgeous places to visit very nearby and you can have a great outdoors lifestyle if that matters to you. There’s no big sports vibe, but there are plenty of opportunities to do club sports if that’s of interest.
U Del and Rutgers are wayyyy bigger than Bing. Too big, IMO. Academically, Bing is probably more challenging than the others. Kids at Bing are happy and it has a good retention rate. U Del will have a more traditional collegiate experience, but for a few thousand more and better academics, I’d choose Bing.
As someone who currently goes to Rutgers, I really think that between the prices, location to New York and Philly, as well as educational opportunity and extra curricular events, this school is unbeatable.
