I am torn between my state school Rutgers and Fordham (40k a year, 10k more than RU). (I got deadline extensions so don’t worry abt the date) I am planning to study Communications but I am still torn between them so I was wondering if anyone had any opinions.
Basically it comes down to your family finances. If your family can afford to pay the extra money without taking out loans or experiencing financial distress, it comes down to doing whatever you (and your parents) decide to do. However, if your family has to take out student loans for the entire $10K/yr, I would not recommend the extra expense.
Both are very good universities and you can get a good education at either.
How would you pay for the difference?
What do you like about Fordham?
Since Ill be working in Media I think that the NYC connections would help and i think the Bronx campus is nicer than Rutgers
good points – although Rutgers, being so close to NYC, also has good connections there.
How would you pay for the difference - can your parents afford it “out of pocket” or would they need to take loans for you to go to Fordham?
There are a small collective of universities in this country that are separated from all of the others, and for which it would be worth it to incur debt to attend them. Fordham is a great school, but it is not one of those elite debt-worthy universities. Your life will not be changed by having a Fordham degree vs a Rutgers degree.
It’s a communications degree. You will likely not get paid well and just because you want to be in NY depending on what you want to be…such as in broadcasting, you are more likely to be in Montana than NYC. Rutgers a no brainer.
I’m not sure if broadcasting is the direction OP wants to pursue but, Fordham does seem to produce a fair number of announcers, commentators and radio personalities in the sports arena (albeit this is of course a very competitive field).
My focus is not on broadcasting or journalism but more corporate communications such as PR or Markerting. I would need to take out loans.
gotcha - ok, montana is out - but you still want to go to Rutgers.
Still a field that pays notoriously poorly and frankly, do you have a cheaper option, like a Montclair State?
Unless money weren’t an issue, cheaper is best. And when you are taking out loans, money is an issue!!!
Then, the answer is easy: Rutgers.

Note that Rutgers, being so close to NYC, is well-connected to that market.
Try getting into the Honors Program for communication or into the Honors College because that type of “prestige/honor/recognition” will matter for PR internships.
