I am considering both of these schools to study computer science. Although Rutgers is ranked higher according to US News than UVM and I am in-state, I have qualms about it's reputation as the school seems to be a bit of a "running joke" here. On the other hand, I really don't know much about UVM and if their program is any good.

While Vermont has a respectable selection of CS courses, don’t let an “anywhere but Rutgers” attitude turn you away from Rutgers, which is low cost for you as an in-state student and has a well respected CS department.

Thanks. I am also considering the feel of the campuses and surrounding areas. NB, AFAIK, is like any other New Jersey cities: has some okay parts and bad parts. How is Burlington?

I have two friends at UVM and they all love it and Burlington is supposed to be a beautiful outdoorsy college town so very different from New Brunswick. Although I do believe you would be paying a whole lot more as an oos student at Vermont even with scholarships and the CS department is alot less reputable than the one at Rutgers. Also keep in mind the driving distance for you just in case you wish to come home for the weekend or need to in case of emergency. If you parents can comfortably afford UVM and you absolutely loath Rutgers than why not go.

At OOS costs of about 49K, that’s a lot of money to pay for a public university whose program in your major may not be as good as what you have at home!

Burlington is a nice college town, and you had better like winter ;-)

Rutgers is better academically and cheaper than UVM. A lot of NJ grads go to UVM, because it is a beautiful area.
If you go to Rutgers, try to join clubs, to find ways to fit in to a large university.

Thanks for all the replies.

About NB, I’m not worried about the area (being from Trenton and all), but I heard Burlington is a very different type of city, and rural New England is stunning.

I personally have no problem with Rutgers, but it seems to (unfairly IMO) get a bad rap for taking a lot of NJ kids.

UVM is letting me apply for free, so I guess I’ll apply to both, see what happens?

BTW, these are both my “match” schools, (super reach: UBC, reaches: NYU, Lehigh, safety: Scranton)

Again, I really appreciate the replies and advice.
