Keep your 4.0. Also keep challenging yourself with harder classes. You will probably want to try and get as close to 2400 as you can but at least get over 2300 which you should be able to do. Other than that get some EC’s that make you look special and that you can get involved in. You are unlucky. Over-represented minority in an over-represented state for Ivy’s. Good luck though.

Hey Virginia!

Thanks for the chance. I’m actually kind of taking the hardest schedule I can since I took Bio and Calc BC sophomore year, so the only option for science is Physics H (we don’t have physics AP). I also can’t take Calc since, well, I took it last year. Hopefully adcoms will take this into account (:

I was also kind of hoping that the freelance graphic design and internationally recognized photography could give me a boost and be categorized as “special” extracurriculars compared to other Ivy applicants with science research etc.

But I totally agree with you about how it totally sucks being an ORM in an ORS. It’s times like these I wished I live in Alaska, or, say, Minnesota.

Do you have a thread that you’d like me to chance you back?

Sure why not. I haven’t been chanced in a few days.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/776353-i-might-well-take-chance.html</a></p>

Yes, everything is on the right track I’d say. You’re performing at a high level and have some nice interests to develop. I would say just don’t stress and be yourself–couple the true you with your impressive stats and you have a great shot at ending up where you want. I hate to be ambiguous, but this is the best advice I can give.

My chance thread is on this page (chance my tentative list)

Wooow you’re doing pretty great. Your EC’s are really focused in my opinion - the national awards, plus the company that you started go together in my opinion to produce a pretty rounded EC. If you develop each more as you go along, you’ll become a really strong candidate.

As for your scores, for the top schools (Harvard etc.) a raised SAT score would be beneficial (obviously.), but an being an ORM doesn’t help at all ;_; (as stated before xD).

I think the development of your EC’s further will be crucial for getting into the higher unis.

Thanks for considering my opinions. XD

Also, I’d really appreciate it if you took the time to chance me back :D

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/776103-konnichiwa-mabuhay-clueless-japanese-filipino.html</a></p>

Foy HYPSB who knows. If you get a 2300 plus you’ll be in the running. But you’re in one of the most competitive pools possible as an Asian from CA.

For this pool much will come down to essays and recs. There are many, many more Asian vals with near perfect scores from CA applying than they can take.

I would get your scores as high as you can, choose excellent teachers to write your recs and write outstanding applications.

I wish I could be as unique as you! Your EC’s are very unique, focused, and show passion. You also have great academics. Solid SAT and great sat II’s. Try to raise your sat, which shouldnt be too hard if you took it cold. If you can get a 2300+, I don’t know what else you really can do except write great essays and get amazing letters of reccommendations. Despite all this, HYP will be a great challenge since you are ORM from cali. Brown and Cornell seem reasonable though, and you have decent shots at one of the prestigious HYPS. Good luck!!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/775369-chance-me-please-columbia-early-decision.html</a></p>

You are overall a very sound canidate. But so are most other ivy applicants, I think its a bit early to give you a totally viable chance since you still have a full school year to go before you start sending applications but Ill do the best I can

-harvard: high reach (it is for everyone)
-yale: high reach (see harvard)
-princeton: high reach (see yale)
-stanford: high reach (see princeton)
-brown: low reach
-cornell: low reach/high match
-uc berkeley (in state): high match
-ucla (in state): high safety, low match
-uci (in state): You’re In. :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/778307-brown-dartmouth-uchicago-cornell-upenn-pomona-rice-michigan-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

Your EC’s are great.
I’m really only familiar with the photography ones, and for someone who JUST started… it’s amazing. I’ve been in photography for awhile now and haven’t come close to international status. Just curious, what contests did you enter? Have you looked into Scholastics? Really great opportunity to boost your photo awards

I’m not the best with knowing good scores, but it seems like taking the SAT over again is a good idea. Also, have you taken the ACT or plan to?

@ everyone: Thanks for the chances! I’ll be sure to chance you guys in the next couple of min. Thanks for giving me the link.

@ kseajayne: Yeah, I really want to enter the Scholastic Art and Writing this year. I couldn’t make the deadline last year as I started in late Jan/early Feb so hopefully I can enter some decent shots this year. Just wondering - why does it have an entry fee? I was looking at it a couple of months ago and my parents kind of discouraged me from entering since it has a fee, and according to them, all the competitions with fees are total scams. It seems like an established competition, so I have no doubt it’s legit, but I was just wondering what the entry cost was for.

I basically Google “photography contests” and I especially take note of the yearly ones. If I missed the deadline, it doesn’t matter - I record all the contests I find in a Word document and I note the approximate time of year it takes place in. That way, when it’s near that month, I just find that contest again and enter it. Hopefully that helps (:

It’s incredibly legit and some colleges LOVE to give scholarships to Gold Key winners. Even if your photos only rank high in regional competition, it looks great on transcripts. The fee is probably for something necessary, they don’t seem like that type of company. They’re really in it for the artists. Also, it has been around for a very long time and many famous artists (including Stieglitz I believe) have gotten national awards from them. I HIGHLY suggest you do it this year. I just completed my junior year and came out of it with 2 gold keys a an honorable mention. Sophomore year I received 3 honorable mentions. These were all regional awards. I can definitely see you getting some really decent awards from them. It’s a great opportunity.

Thanks for the advice on the competitions, I’ll totally get on google and play detective as soon as I finish writing this.

Again, Scholastics, do it.

Okay, I’ll be sure to check it out this year! Thanks for reminding me (:

No, terrible applicant.

James, you already chanced me, so here’s what I think…ARE YOU KIDDING ME? CRAZY stats! Yeah sure, you’re an ORM but hey, you’ve got great things going for you, I’d really be surprised if you kept things up and didn’t get into a couple of the ivies!!!Great Job, oh and could you pm a fellow photographer some of the contests you entered? And what are those international championships?don’t worry I’m not much competition, you saw my work:)I’d just be interested in knowing about those, so pm and GL, you’re doing great!.

Nizzle, my statement in the other thread was serious. I wasn’t kidding.

Mr. HS, sent you the contests.

Most of those colleges are high reaches and you might want to narrow your list. If you’re into economics and law, look at non-Ivies in New York and Washington, D.C. Very good schools, some of them.

Your California choices are NOT reaches; Your stats are great!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/781283-smith-mt-holyoke-bates.html</a></p>

Thanks, Pickwickan, chanced you back.

I got results for another photography competition.

+1x international contest, display/publish
(one out of 10 that will be featured in a traveling exhibit around world + published in book)

Hey! Thanks for chancing me. YOU ARE AMAZING !! Calc BC in sophomore year that is crazy. You’re only a junior but if you don’t get into the Ivies or even HYP for that matter, there is something seriously wrong with the adcoms. All of those stellar international awards and that school ranking, you should be a shoe in if you write outstanding essays.

Aw thanks. As much as I want to join my sister at Harvard, I don’t know if my SAT is up to par, so I’ll try re-doing it.

Regardless, I don’t think anyone is a shoo-in at Harvard, especially me.

Thanks for the encouragement though.
