SA in China, a Chinese-American

I'm a Chinese-American who is taking Chinese classes to learn how to read/write Chinese. I currently know how to speak/read/write English very well, and only know how to speak two dialects of Chinese. Cantonese - I can speak it well. Mandarin - I can speak it conversationally.

However, my friends think it's very "close-minded" of me to focus so much on China/Chinese language. I just hope to perfect my language so I can perhaps work or intern in China in the future (just because I feel that being multilingual would put me in a good position).

Do you think this is a good idea?

Also, on top of Chinese, I am thinking of adding on another language class such as Spanish or Japanese. Japanese would be easier for me, as I have a slight foundation. Spanish, I have taken for 7 years and still can only speak like a 5-year-old!

It’s a good opportunity - take it. Japan is close by should you choose to hop over.

You should tell your friends to get lost. If you didn’t ask for their opinion, who do they think they are?

About China, since you’re not Chinese I don’t think it’s close-minded at all for you to focus on China. It is a foreign country after all.
