Do you guys think Sacramento provides all you would want in a city experience? I adore that Davis is located in what seems to be the perfect college town, but I also would like to get the city experience frequently. So, what do you guys think of Sacramento? What are your favorite things to do there?

An hour or so to Tahoe for skiing/boarding in the winter, river rafting in the summer, shows if you have $$$.OK restaurants, Mondovi center for the arts. San Francisco, Napa, within one hour ; Monterey within two hours.

Disclaimer; I’m a parent.

^Thanks! But I was wondering more about Sacramento itself and what it has to offer.

Yeah, well… it’s diverse, and there are malls…I guess I don’t have anything else to add… but then I’m from NYC.

I live in sacramento and I must say, its a very suburban city. Basically if you come here not knowing anyone, it would be quite boring, however the people in this city are very friendly (just don’t go to the bad areas). Pretty much malls are all we have to offer and eating out. The fun comes in when you hang at your friends house and figure out what to do from there. I guess clubbing would be fun or downtown on the weekends. ehhh…

Alot of peole also go to San Fransisco to get a real taste of the city, so your best bet would be to go there if you have time.

Sacramento offers pretty much anything you could want in a city (although, obviously, not on the scale of Los Angeles or NYC)

Sacramento has great shopping (several very large malls, including Arden Fair, downtown plaza, and the Roseville Galleria), decent nightlife (numerous clubs, etc.), entertainment venues (of all kinds… concerts, comedy, whatever), and lots of great dining. Sacramento is by no means “boring” or “small,” but if you’re looking for something more, San Francisco is within driving distance. And Lake Tahoe and some great skiiing/snowboarding is only a couple hours east of Davis. As far as Sacramento itself is concerned, if you’re looking for something to do, it’s probably large and diverse enough for you to find it.

Check out this link to Sacramento Magazine. Obviously this isn’t representative of everything to do in Sacramento - and it’s a few years old - but it gives some idea of what Sacramento’s like.

50 Things to Do in Sacramento

can you also go to san fran by the actual davis shuttle? or do you take a different bus system? do people go there often on the weekends?

to me, sacramento seems pretty perfect for the city experience on weekends, just to hang out, chill, experience something a little different than the college town when one feels like it. it would be even more ideal if san fran really is very easy to get to. :)

There is a shuttle that goes between Davis and Berkeley (which is only a few miles away from San Francisco). I think there may also be a shuttle from Berkeley to UC San Francisco (the medical school), but I’ve never used it. It doesn’t really matter, though, because the Bay Area has a great public transit system. If you can get to Berkeley (or any other part of the Bay Area), you can just get on a bus or on BART and you can get pretty much anywhere in a matter of minutes. If you have a car, San Francisco is about an hour away (maybe more, depending on traffic…)

You can also get to downtown Sacramento by bus. If you have a car, Sacramento is about 10-15 minutes away. Some people even ride their bikes (although I would definitely avoid that in bad weather).

thanks! well i’m not planning on taking a car if i go to davis so…how long would it take to get to san fran by shuttle and then bus? and also how long would it take to get to sacramento by bus?

Sacramento is extremely close to Davis… if there weren’t so many trees around, you would probably be able to see the skyscrapers from campus. But it’ll take a little longer by bus than by car.

You actually have several options to get to Sacramento by bus.

First, the UC Davis Medical Center Shuttle (takes you to the medical center, which is near downtown sacramento). Takes about half an hour.
[Shuttle Service](http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/parking/transportation/campus_timetable.html)

Second, YoloBus route 42 - takes you to the center of downtown, but takes longer (like, 45 minutes)
[Yolobus - Routes & Schedules](http://www.yolobus.com/m3.html)

The UC Davis - UC Berkeley shuttle takes an hour and a half. Add another 15-20 minutes from Berkeley to get to downtown San Francisco (so you’re looking at about two hours, realistically, to go from campus to downtown SF by bus/public transit)
[Berkeley Bus Schedules - Fleet Services - University of California at Davis](<a href=“Fleet Services | Safety Services”>Fleet Services | Safety Services)

And, if you’re willing to pay a little more, you can take Amtrak to San Francisco from Davis. Davis has a train station, and the Bay Area has several stations (all of which connect up to regional transit).

And for getting around Davis, here’s the Unitrans homepage (with a route map). Unitrans is operated jointly by ASUCD and the City of Davis.

Here are the Bay Area’s two main regional transit websites:

[BART - Bay Area Rapid Transit](http://www.bart.gov/)

And Sacramento’s regional transit website:

wow thanks so much for all the info!! very helpful!! :D
