For the second straight year, I can't do band because of a scheduling conflict. This year, it interferes with my AP Physics C class. Would this look funny if trumpet is one of my top ECs? I still take lessons, play with certain ensembles, and do other stuff too. I'm pretty sure my guidance counselor could mention something about this in his LOR.

I think it should be fine b/c most colleges understand that students are often faced with scheduling conflicts. Plus, you are still involved with trumpet (just not in school band). AP Physics probably looks better on the transcript than band anyways.

Your extracurriculars don’t have to be school-sponsored to be put on an application :)

It won’t look weird, but make sure you are taking physics because you want to, not because you think it will look better to colleges.

It won’t look weird at all if you trumpet all alone in your bedroom dressed like Justin Bieber wearing a giant fish helmet watching movies from band camp over and over and weeping.

(…take APPhysC if you want, do trumpet on your own, let us know, it won’t look 'weird )

MITChris, you’re the best.

And saints2009, I had the same dilemma (except with clarinet). I stuck with band. I guess it just depends how you can put it across in your application.

I hate violin. It sucks. So I quit after 7 years of playing and numerous state awards.

Too bad. But now I feel so relieved!! I can spend more time programming microchips and designing circuits and stuff! Woot!

I don’t know why I didn’t quit earlier. Guess I always thought it might be a waste to quit now right before college admission. But… ***. lol
