I got a composite of 29. Don’t get me wrong, I know I’m in the top %7 of test takers. It’s not that I’m sad that I think it’s a bad score, but I feel like I could have done so much better. Most of the schools I want to apply have an average of 30+ ACT score. What angers me is that my math score was ridiculous low for me. Ironically, I felt the math was really easy. On practice tests, math is around 26+ for me. However, on the actual ACT I got a 24 :/. My scores go as shows:
Science: 33
Reading: 32
English: 26
Math: 24
English was relatively low as well, but that didn’t really surprise me. Can someone please give me honest tips for Math and English that will seriously help me out! They can be as specific as possible to broad. Thanks so much!
Hi!
Don’t worry I am in the same situation as you, struggling as a junior. If you had not already bought ACT books, I really do recommend buying them and using all the tests each book provides. For the english section, when you read the questions, I suggest that you go back to the passage and find the sentence that talks about what the question is asking. Often if you read around that one sentence, you can find the exact answer or relatively similar answer to your question. Try to use the process of elimination for each question because very often will you find that answers that sound wrong or absurd will be incorrect just as you thought. If there were any questions that you omitted on this test for these two sections, the best thing to do is to practice more and pace yourself, so you leave a few minutes to go back to the questions you were not sure about or at least check some of your answers again. As for math, I actually have very little advice for because the ACT math section is just like each school’s pre calc course. I do not know what math you take as of right now, so I cannot give you much advice. If you are taking pre calc now, try to look through your math textbook and do more questions that you see on the ACT. For instance, review problems that have to do with the trig functions. Remember that when you take a practice ACT or the real one, make sure you read all the answers because sometimes there are very little tweaks in answers that differ one from another. The last option for math is that you should ask your teacher or friends for some help because that could clear up a lot of your mistakes or confusion. Anyways GOOD LUCK TO BOTH OF US you can definitely do it and do not let this one grade drop your self esteem because you still have plenty of other choices and chances! Just because you got one undesirable score does not mean that you will not be accepted from the colleges you want to get into. Colleges take into consideration of other aspects too!
Thanks so much! I’m currently in Algebra 2. It sucks, because a decent amount of ACT questions I haven’t covered yet. It’s pretty hard for me to teach math to myself. However, I wanna say good luck! Glad I’m not the only one in this situation. Hopefully, we will both conquer this ACT. I’m only taking in one more time. I can only hope by then that I’ll significantly improve!
My daughter took the test Feb of her jr year. At that time she said there were several problems that she had not done yet in Alg 2. She took it again in September and felt that she was much better prepared for the math section. She went from a 27 to a 31 on the math section. Ideally she wanted to take the test in June, but she had another commitment on testing day that she couldn’t avoid. She was worried that she’d get a bit rusty over the summer so she worked on a book of practice tests during August. Her composite was a 29 the first time she took it and a 31 the second. Don’t get discouraged.
