Sad: Just got Rejected from University Park

Sat I's: Verbal: 600 Math:760 Writing: 700
Sat II's: Chinese:750
Math I:730
Math II:770
Physics:680

High School:
Gpa:97.09 out of 110 possible (Weighted)
Rank: 90ish/530
All Normal Classes at our school are weighted as Honors cause our school is very competitive.

Got Rejected for the major International Business, and second major, economics

OMG. i can't believe this. :(

I had lower stats than yours and got into the accelerated business program at University Park.

Penn State's acceptances have been all over the place this year!!!

Keep in mind that you probably got rejected because you might have applied too late. PSU is trying to cut down the number of students by rejecting those that applied late. So, the students in the smaller sample of students that got in this year, don't necessarily have better stats, they just applied early. Also, psu does not consider sat IIs and we don't know if you are from oos, which could have an impact. Where are you going now?

Superman19..that really stinks. You have awesome stats...good grief.

I wonder what they have done? They need to accept less people with more applications and not get burned. Will the people who are admitted end up going? Did they admit everyone two months ago? I think all the colleges are in a flux right now as their usual methods of recruitment are no longer working well.
I wonder if this is why U of Mich. is considering dropping rolling admission. That way they can just take the cream of the crop instead of missing great students like Superman. Im sorry, Superman...you should have gotten in.

Like I said, they are admitting less because of the >8000 incoming class of last year, but not necessarily becoming more selective. So someone, with a 1250 and a 3.6, from PA who applied in september may have been admitted, while superman was rejected.

Lack of haste would be the most likely explanation.

However, cheer up. I'm sure with your stats you'll get into a school better than PSU.

These recent rejections of students with good qualifications is a tough circumstance. Clearly, the folks at UP encourage people to get their applications in EARLY, and now it seems there is good reason. The incoming freshman class was way too large last year, so they are trimming down the numbers of admitted freshman, all in the face of a larger application pool than last year! Put this all together means a qualified applicant with a complete application early will stand a better chance than the same applicant sending their materials in later.
So not just a numbers game, but a "timing" game also.
Yes, PSU said to have materials complete by Nov. 30 (I think) , but clearly, that may be too late for some good folks interested in UP....I guess the moral is the early bird catches the worm!
Best,
DocRock143

Oh, it actually wasnt late, like one and a half weeks before if you call that late, but many students in our school got in sending it 2 days before, while their sats are just a little over 1100. it just makes me sad lol

i recomend appealing your decision if PSU is your #1 choice

Definitely try an appeal. Something seems wrong.

I spoke to admissions after being rejected with similar stats and they said that my numbers were good for div of undergrad studies (dus) or eberly , but not for smeal this yr. Smeal was particularly picky. i reapplied by email and was accepted into dus. at univ park.good luck

also, i applied aug 1st but did not get my initial rejection from smeal until jan 29th. applying early held no advantage if you applied to smeal.

Yeah, Smeal is a whole other ballgame compared to the college of liberal arts.

wow I wonder how bad the College of Engineering was this year

Doc
Don't know about that - Son applied first week in September with a 1290 and a 3.9. Found out January 26th rejected at UP. Everyone says apply early ...hmmm

Applying early to a rolling admissions popular state school is critical. Ohio State and Minnesota are also turning down highly qualified applicants who applied "late" in the process. "Late" may be as early as October at some state univ.s.

I'm pretty sure that at PSU they reply in "batches," the first batch being from the very beginning up till the middle of October.

psu is NOT rolling admissions, all app's up to Nov 30th are considered at the same time UNLESS you are on the very high end with your sat's etc... It really depends on what school you apply to and you have a better chance at U Park if you select summer.. it worked for me...

Like i applied like 3 weeks before deadline, but my friend who's rank like only top 60% got in, with a 1100 at EOP. I dont know if i applied to smeal, i didnt specifically pick it, lol. so i dont know how. It seems as if all the stupid people at out school get in, and all the smart people didnt, oh yeah and i live in the state, FYI.
