How good is Sadler as a dorm? I got assigned there, but found very few info about it. Can someone please share any thoughts on Sadler?

Sadler is near the Dome and next to Lawrinson dorm. It has a caff that students from both Sadler and Lawrinson use. Walk to quad is a 5 minute up a medium grade hill. Like all of the SU campus area, there’s lots of wind, and as a student there in 1980s I remember the wind tunnel affect of that walk to the quad.

Rather than walking up the hill, if you walk from Sadler down Irving, you’ll be on “M Street” (Marshall Street) in a little over 5 minutes. That’s where most of the college restaurants/bars are located.

Behind Sadler is a decent (safe) neighborhood. But if you walk down Irving towards Marshall a bit, and take a left towards the city down the hill, things get quite sketchy. You likely won’t be heading there for anything, so no worries.

Sadler is not as centrally located as some other dorms that are connected closer to campus, but the walk isn’t that bad. The toughest walk from a dorm area to campus is arguably Brewster/Bowland/Brockway, which is down quite a steep hill from campus with a combo of sidewalks and a lot of covered steps.

Overall, Sadler is a good dorm option, especially if you were able to get into a split double. I was stuck on 1st floor freshman year, which means there’s not community room at the meeting of the two wings (it’s just the lobby), and all residents are guys. Also all (I think) are open doubles. Sophomore year I selected to stay in Sadler, but had a neat split double on 2nd floor, which also had one wing boys, one wing girls, with a community meeting place at the center.

Good luck and enjoy SU!

@BillysDad2014, thanks a lot for such a detailed response!!! I got the split double on the third floor - very excited! Also, I believe that all the floors are co-ed know at any 'Cuse dorm :)

Greetings from someone who lived in Lawrinson Hall (across from Sadler) in the 80s. As BillysDad2014 noted, Sadler is located downhill from campus. It is literally yards away from the Carrier Dome - a BIG plus if you are planning on attending games there. In terms of the amount of time that it will take you to walk to campus, I vividly recall that it would take me 7 minutes (yes, I timed it) to get from Lawrinson to Maxwell. One of the many nice things about living in Sadler is the dining hall that is underneath the building. Back in the day, the food was OK - but I understand that it has gotten much better.

I suspect that the strong social bond between residents of Sadler and Lawrinson halls continues today as back in the '80s. Though I lived in Lawrinson, I had many friends in Sadler.

In regards to the wind tunnel mentioned by BillysDad2014, it is true that the wind between the Dome and Archbold gym, and between the Dome and the SUNY ESF buildings could really be bad. The worse wind tunnel, however, that I ever experienced was the one between Sadler and Lawrinson Hall.

Best wishes and congratulations on your admission to SU - you will love it there.

So guys, here I am at Sadler Hall! It almost have been a year since I am at Syracuse and I can say that Sadler is the best! I really love it! The bathrooms are very nice, a lot of split doubles and the dining hall is the best on campus! The location is not bad at all - only takes 10 min to get to the quad.
Any other comments on Sadler Hall? Room quality? Bathrooms? Dining? Gym?
Son is sophomore in a Sadler split double this year. He loves it; it was his first choice in last season’s housing lottery. The room is nicely laid out, fairly large closet. Bathrooms were remodeled recently so they are one person style. Son says the dining hall is better than BBB or Ernie and is open later than some. I don’t think there’s a gym in the building, but it is one of the closest dorms to Archibald gym (near the Dome).
