Safe campus? Access to the City?

Is the rose hill campus sort of self-contained? or is it spread out all over the place?

do you feel safe at the Rose Hill campus? (i am a small town cali girl and nyc is a bit intimidating :).. especially being in the bronx haha)

and.. i heard its hard to get access to the city easily.. True?

also.. do they have decent merit aid? (4.1 GPA and 2040 sats)

I just visited the RH campus this summer, so I can give you my impression of it. It's in the Bronx, so the area around it was definitely more "urban", and some parts looked a little run-down, but the actual campus is closed off and very green--you can barely tell you're even in the Bronx. I'm pretty sure it's safe; there was tons of security, phones and those blue light things around. None of the students we talked to seemed to show any doubts about their safety. The outside area isn't even that bad; Little Italy is right down the street. We ate at a restaurant there, and the food was GOOD. Haha.

As for it being hard to access the city, I'd have to assume that's false. RH was a little under a half an hours away from Manhattan/NYC, and our tour guide told us that more than half the students leave campus at nights & on the weekends to go hang out there. And plus, you can get subsidized theatre tickets and etc. It didn't sound as though they're in want of activities.

Can't help w/the merit aid question, since I haven't even applied yet, ha.

the Ram Van is a great option to get to the city. Drops you off at the Lincoln Center campus.

My D started there this fall. The Rose Hill campus is beautiful and the students there seem to feel very safe. We attended a few safety talks by security and they stress that on campus is very safe, but you must act with street smarts and common sense off campus. In other words - don't be off campus alone at night. That should be true everywhere!! One side of the campus is the Bronx Botanical Gardens, bu on the other side of the campus is a real urban neighborhood and the Bronx' Little Italy.

It is very easy to navigate off campus. The ram Van goes to Lincoln Center (West Side of Manhattan) on a regular basis for a reasonable fee (free if for a class or an internship). Your other options are a Metro North train (to Grand Central Station - East Side) or the subway (to anywhere in NYC). We were told there is a Ram Van that is always at the subway stop to transport students back to campus because the subways in NYC are 24/7.

It is a unique combination of beautiful campus and access to NYC. It might be intimidating, but at the end of your 4 years, you'll be a pro!

Hey! My D is a sophomore. We are NOT from New York or the northeast. It was huge culture shock for her (and us.) But its been a wonderful experience.

Rose Hill is extremely safe. Like all colleges, you have to be smart like NOT binge drinking, going out alone at night off campus etc.

Rose Hill kids hang in groups and do all sorts of things in the city. They ride the Metro North Train direct to Grand Central to go into Manhattan (or up to White Plains in the other direction.) The train station is literally right outside the Fordham gates! Its a 10 minute ride and costs 4.00. The Metro North runs until 100 am. The subway runs all night and is available but 99.9% of students dont use the subway...its a long 4 block walk from campus, its dirty, its underground and its not always safe....though we rode it to Columbia University during the day and it was fine. They ride the subway to Shea Stadium or Yankee stadium.

People obsess about Little Italy and the surrounding area. Its ethnic and eclectic to be sure. But those people make a living running shops, restaurants and stores that serve the Fordham community. Often students work there and most of them look out for Fordham kids. As usual, dont go there alone at night and dont go binge drinking. Many restaurants stay open late for Fordham kids and offer discounts after 1000pm, like half price pasta and stuff. So its fun.

To the northeast of Fordham, you go (or drive) along Moshulu Parkway into the Riverdale Section/Cloisters. Its VERY posh and upper class there. That is where Manhattan College is located (Christian Bros.) Also, if you are driving into Campus from upstate New York or New Jersey, you cross the GeorgeWashington Bridge. take the Henry Hudson Parkway (highway 9) along the Hudson River-North, cross over the Harlem River and into Riverdale, take the Moshulu Parkway to the Botanical Gardens and PRESTO! You are at Fordham's front gate. Its a gorgeous drive, safe, clean and a lot nicer than the Cross Bronx Expressway (Interstate 95).

Fordham is a great school. Kids are very tight. They have lots of fun, work very hard and get good jobs! Lots of phenomenal internships too!

So spread the word! Good luck.

I grew up in the Bronx and am on campus quite often and I can assure you the campus is very safe. Security does an outstanding job. The head of security is ex-NYPD and many security officers are also ex-NYPD. They work closely with the local police to keep the area safe. There was actually a rare incident today on campus and security was right on it. They installed new blue lights over the summer that make the campus even more secure for the students. My daughter did not choose to go to Fordham, but I have to tell you out of all the colleges we visited last year, Fordham was absolutely the most secure. Every school we visited, I compared to Fordham. I was shocked that so many campuses would let anyone enter without showing I.D., but this does not happen at Fordham. If you don't belong there, you will not get in (and if you sneak in, they will find you!). I have been on campus thousands of times, and while I was there today, I said to myself, "this place is absolutely gorgeous." - it is a very pretty, classic campus that most dream of.
