MOWC: So glad your son wasn’t on campus. But I agree with DonnaL. Columbia may be urban, but Morningside Heights is now the second safest area of the city. DD graduated from Barnard in May without any incident during the four years she was there. She felt completely safe.

She can’t wait to get back to NYC for law school. She’s in Atlanta for a gap year.

MoWC, I am very thankful that wildchild is safe. My D is auditioning at Curtis, which looks on the map to be fairly close to Penn? Do you have any idea how safe the area around Curtis is? She has no street smarts, which if she gets in I will work on.

MoWC, glad your child is safe…I clicked your post out of curiosity and imagine my surprise to find that this is in D’s world…she lives just 7 blocks from the shooting and is in her second semester rather than her last! Very frightening. I must say, though, that I’ve visited Penn three times and, each time, I’ve been (pleasantly) shocked by the number of Penn police–they seem to be on every corner. I do agree with other posters, though, that these kinds of frightening and horrible events can happen anywhere.

Curtis is at 17th and Locust. The problem is that you don’t live at Curtis, so your daughter would be taking public transportation to and from Curtis and wherever she finds to live. I don’t know where the Curtis students live, but I bet some of them live in the Penn/Drexel area. 17th and Locust is Center City. It tends to be somewhat safer than the area to the west of the Penn campus.

Thank you. I am not sure about living arrangements for Curtis. I know they are building a dorm to be ready in my D’s sophomore year. It is such a long shot for her to get in that I kinda feel liking crossing that bridge if we get to it. I suppose it might be worth it to spend more for an apartment that is very close. Scary to think of her walking around Philly by herself!

Vibrant is analogous to lots of good restaurants, sporting events, cultural activities and clubs. It is not where I have chosen to live, but those who live there (including my son) find a lot to like about Philadelphia.

And collage1 is correct- there are Penn police everywhere. That cuts down on crime, but don’t be fooled…

Now another incident in Old City Philly. Villanova student who tried to stop a Temple Grad student with a gun, was shot 5 times and is in critical condition.
Fox news has footage, because this happened at 2 am when the bar next to their studio closed. Their cameras captured all of this.
What’s going on …!!!

An arrest has been made in the overnight shooting of a 23 year old man in Old City.

Police say the unidentified man was shot four times in the chest. He is listed in critical condition at Jefferson University Hospital.

The shooting occurred at 4th and Market Streets around 2:30am. It was captured by Fox 29 surveillance cameras.

Police say two men got into a fight after leaving a nearby club. During the argument one of the men pulled out a gun and started shooting. He is now in police custody. Charges are pending.

Joining the chorus of those happy to hear WildChild is fine.

With regards to the crime and campus relationship, not only are student considered easy pickings by the criminals, but students also are less likely to question the presence of people who don’t belong in a setting and taking appropriate action (either leaving and/or contacting authorities). A campus environment (including the areas adjacent where student activity dominates the scene) is treated very much like “live and let live”, which just allows the wolves to wander among the sheep.

Not just, UPenn and Vandy. Even UT with the recent incidents with athletes and guns shows the nature of the urban campus environment.

C’mon. Let’s be fair. Violence is an ever present part of life in EVERY city in the US. It is just not fair to paint Penn (or Temple) with this brush (especially considering it took place far far away from either campus).

I had to laugh. Only someone in the true south would dare to write UT and expect people to know it means Tennessee! Yeah- there’s the football and basketball player stuff… At Penn it’s the wrestlers who beat the cr***p out of other students in bar fights. The football and basketball players stay pretty under the radar.

Triguena- the incident that led me to start this thread took place AT the Penn campus. It is the intersection where my son and many other students live, eat, shop and go to the movies.

@MOWC yes, I know. I am glad your son is fine. I was referring to the subsequent post about the bar fight in Old City. My point was that bringing upvague city violence is not fair to Penn or Temple or any other city school.

^^^ Old City report happened far away.
Just found it interesting that a TEMPLE GRAD student used a gun, and critically injured a Villanova student who intervened to stop him.

Yes, MOWC, and from the film footage shown on Fox News, it appeared to be about 30 people leaving the bar, and a minor incident occurred between two guys.
The Temple Grads student pulled the gun, and, the amazing thing is that the Villanova student rushed the Temple student, and was shot five time, in his hand, chest ect, and successfully knocked down the shooter, despite being shot 5 times.

Gunfire rang out on the sidewalk in the 300 block of Market Street around 2:45 a.m.

23-year-old Eddie DiDonato was struck six times in the chest and abdomen, police say. He was taken to Jefferson University Hospital.

Eddie’s father, Ed DiDonato Sr. spoke with Action News and said his son remains in critical condition.

Ed Sr. said his son graduated from Villanova last May and was the Captain of the Lacrosse team. His father says Eddie just started his first job last Monday at Nationwide.

He is amazed at how tough Eddie is.

Police have told Eddie’s father that the suspect is a third year law student at Temple Unveristy.

He is identified as 28-year-old Gerald Ung of the 300 block of South 43rd Street. Ung is under arrest and charged with Attempted Homicide, Aggravated Assault and related offenses. He is originally from Virginia.

There is still no word on what sparked the shooting.
