Safe for Gays?

In general how are gays treated? Any incidents of visible homophobia? Are people generally accepting?

The university and most of the college population don’t care whether you are gay or not, you are just treated like anyone else. Moreover, there are gay based student organizations generally referred to as the LGBT organizations, see [LGBT Resource Center | Student Affairs at Illinois](http://studentaffairs.illinois.edu/diversity/lgbt/). However, you will be in the middle of the Midwest and middle of Illinois in a conservative area. Have not personally heard of any incidents for years but you might face a small risk of running into intolerant local residents and a small risk of running into some students who are adverse but then that risk exists virtually anywhere.

Easy enough to find out I’m sure. You can run a search on the interweb easily enough and look for cases of hate crimes or reach out to the local LGBT organization on campus and ask your questions.

My guess would be that college campuses are among the most tolerant, overly PC places in America. Should be okay there.

Do some homework.

Good luck!

If going, consider Allen Residence Hall. Lots of interesting and cool people there. Very diverse and tolerant environment. Avoid “6-Pack.” Also, be sure to check out “Quad Day” – usually the Sunday before first day of classes. Several organizations openly represented with lots of information.

The Campus is very accepting. I don’t know what’s wrong with the 6-Pack, there are many open gay people there who have made many friends.
