safe schools in Michigan

So I am applying to Michigan State and am 99% sure I will get in but just to be on the safe side what are some good safe schools?

A lil' bit about me:
Valedictorian-4.1 GPA-2nd in class
27 ACT- retaking it and studying this time
Play softball
Student government Officer
Class president frosh and soph years
Science olympiad

And community service

Any recommendations? In Michigan only please

Different schools would be better depending on what you specifically wanted to do. Michigan Tech would probably be best for science or engineering, Eastern or Northern would be best for education, I think Wayne State would probably be best if you wanted to pursue medicine or law, I’m sure there’s some stuff Western and Central are good at, Kettering and Oakland University are good if you want to get into the car industry. For more liberal arts type stuff, you could look at smaller schools like Hope, or Albion.

Michigan has some decent private liberal arts colleges that are underappreciated on these pages. Kalamazoo College (ranked #67 LAC by US News) might be a match for you: middle 50% ACT 26-30, 43% in top 10% of class, 67% acceptance rate, probably the strongest of the LACs in Michigan. Hope, Hillsdale, and Calvin are all pretty conservative schools, a little easier to get into than Kalamazoo, but if conservative is your thing, you might investigate. Albion (#116 US News) is a little less conservative.

But with your stats, I think you’ll get into Michigan State, a pretty good school. Take a look at Kalamazoo, though; you might like it.

Grand Valley State is becoming increasingly popular–I really don’t know much about what it has to offer, just that it’s clearly making itself appealing to your peers. Also, for their division, they do quite well in athletics.

@ newsameold

I would definitely consider University of Michigan-Dearborn, Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College.

Kalamazoo College is worth looking at. For a decent safety safety school, however, try someplace like Northern Michigan University. Between 5 and 10,000 students, beautiful location (although remote), and they give out scholarships like crazy. They’re pretty average as far as academics go and could probably be either easy or challenging, whichever you prefer.

ditto what others have said
Kalamazoo would be another good option…many people seem to hold it in higher regard than State. For U of M, make sure you apply ASAP: cause they will send acceptances to the best candidates who apply early very early in the process (I think I got mine in like mid Oct), and it saved me a couple apps to other safety schools. It will also increase your general chances of admission significantly.

off the top of my head nobody’s mentioned michigan tech but then again that’s in the UP and doesn’t offer much if you’re not into engineering and all that jazz. I think they have a free app though…not sure.

Michigan Tech was the first school I mentioned…

any school in inner city Detroit is quite safe. No worries about gang fights or drug wars there.

I assume comment #9 is meant to be a funny joke, but it’s worth mentioning that WSU has, at least previously, a remarkably low crime rate. I don’t know if it’s because so few students are on campus after dark (this was before residence halls were available) or because their locale made them take such issues very seriously. But the fact remains, on many measures WSU was a “safer” campus than U-M or MSU.

U will definitely get into MSU 100%, aim for MSU lyman Briggs with Honors, just get ur ACT to 30, and if u pull it up to a 33, you get a Proffessorial Assistantship (research internship) with a $2000 stipend too. Why not also aim for U of M ann arbor, i’m surprised no one else mentioned it yet. As for safeties apply to the following: UM-flint, Kettering, Northern Michigan University, Northwestern college (not Northwestern University lol), Michigan Tech, Eastern Michigan University, Grand Valley( nice campus and extremely nice dorms, prob the best dorms I’ve ever seen), UM-Dearborn.

@ hoedown- I have to go check out the stats on WSU before I can argue, but most likely if one attends college, he/she will not just stay on campus, they will need to travel, for example if you’re doing premed, you need to got to the DMC for volunteering etc. and generally college students go off campus numerous amount of times, whether for food, hanging out with friends, work, clubbing, etc. You cannot base the safety of a school solely on the campus security, you need to evaluate the college environment as a whole. And once you do that, WSU ends up being pretty dangerous. For example take UM-Ann Arbor, what some consider the perfect college town, you can literally travel the whole city on bike, in the night, without fear;whereas, if you did such a thing in Detroit, you’d be asking for trouble. I’m not trying to shoot down WSU, I’m actually applying there myself, its just that I cannot agree that WSU is safer than MSU or UofM…

Just look up University safity rankings and you’ll find that Wayne State is somewhat lacking in safety. By the way, I forgot to mention Oakland University.

yeah Michigan Tech is the safiest but expect a 9-12 hour drive if you’re from the southen part of the penninsula. But there’s barey any girls up there.

I’m transferring out of Oakland University from what I’ve heard is a place only for commuters.

Wayne State, I don’t know man, Detroit is one of the most dangerous cities in the nation. Including Eastern Michigan University.

I say take MSU or any of the satellite universities except Eastern.

You should have no problems getting into MSU.

Are you applying to UM-Ann Arbor?

Ive been told as long as you have a 3.00 GPA and 21 ACT and apply right away (due to rolling admissions) you will have no problem getting in so you should be able to get in quite easily

You’re 100% in at Michigan State. There’s no need for a safety school, MSU is a safety for someone with your statistics.

I’d be shocked if you didn’t get in. Just turn in a half-decent essay and make sure your application is complete, and there is no way that you won’t get in.
