Safe vs. Risky Path?

Hey

I want to apply to Northwestern and U of M

I dont think my grades are cutting it though, I had a 3. 3 GPA freshman year, a 3.89 sophomore year, so I was wondering if it is worth retaking freshman year classes during my junior year…( not core, things like non-western civ, etc.).
This could hurt my junior year grades as I would be taking a heavier workload.

If I do re-take, my gpa would be (estimate) around 3.79
If I dont, my GPA woud be around 3.87

Yay or Nay?

Thanks

I'm sorry but i think you won't get into northwester either way. I don't know what U of M is. It could be michigan or miami maryland or whatever.

U of M= University of Michigan, sorry

I'm having trouble understanding you - if retaking the classes would lower your GPA, why would you want to retake them in the first place?

To be risky. Duh.

Risky Of Course

sorry, i switched it around.

Retake - 3.89
not retake - 3.79

basically is it worth it, more time, cost (if taken online),
will it make as big of a difference

It is not worth it.

Colleges are impressed by strong upward trends in grades.

Freshman year grades don't count that much.

The time you'd devote to taking courses over would be better spent in pursuing intensely an EC that interests you.

retake! it makes a huge difference for chances at michigan

University of Michigan does not consider freshman grades. That's what we were told on the info session.

yea but they look at cumulative GPA so im wondering

thanks for the responses

I suggest you post on the Michigan board.

Ask Alexandre--he is a moderator on the board and is very helpful.

Unless its a course where you got a D, don't waste time retaking. Instead, sign up for some honors/AP courses Junior year and do WELL, bcos college love to see upward trend. A's in new classes, particularly honors or AP/IB will look much more impressive on a transcript, than seeing an A in a retake of Frosh Spanish, or other such course.

Northstarmom is absolutely correct. Time better spent on ECs, sports, or other passion.

You must have high SATs for either school, at least 1350
