safeness

is it really not safe around campus at night?

I think NEU is one of the safer campuses in the US, but naturally if you go off campus into, say south boston at 2 am, you are bound to get into some trouble sooner or later

campus is safe always. There are always other people walking around and there is also security. From any point on campus you can see a phone to call security if you need it (which you won't).

If you go off-campus, there are a few more sketchy areas, but you'd really have to be wandering far from campus into areas that you probably would never have a reason to go to in the first place. The areas around northeastern are largely student populated so they really aren't bad.

NEU was rated #2 for safety according to this survey:

Ranking the Safest (and Worst) College Campuses | Education | Reader's Digest

some places are sketchier than others (fens, mission hill, westland ave, st. stephen's occasionally). just dont go walking around dimly lit areas by yourself. im pretty petite and i havent had any trouble walking around at midnight, both with ppl and alone, although naturally, i always feel safer when im with friends and do try to avoid those areas.

You really have to be looking for an unsafe part of Boston to wind up in one. NU's campus is very safe. The places you should avoid [Fens at night, Mission Hill, Roxbury] are very easily avoidable. Unless you're looking for coke/heroine, there's really no reason to be in many of these places anyway.

I felt safer in and around the area of Northeastern than around the campus of a state university an hour from home..that university had a mugging / beating that resulted in a young man losing his life.
I have seen security all over NEU , but walked a good distance at night at the state u without seeing any campus security there

A student at NEU was just murdered at Mission Hill the other night

yeah, its on the news and the president sent out an email. They don't know enough about the details to say what the motive is. Looks like a home invasion.

It may be someone she knew, the apartment building where she lived is a secure facility, can only get in with a key. Also neighbors in the area were interviewed stating it is a very safe neighborhood with a large police presence.

The really sad part is that a few neighbors heard the gunshots, but didn't do anything. That was around midnight and she was found in the a.m. by the landlord because the door was ajar. She may have been able to be saved. They won't know until they do an autopsy.

So sad.

Is the Fens that you refer to the Fenway area where Simmons, Emmanuel and a few other colleges are located? Thanks

Sort of. The Back Bay Fens are an isolated part of the "Fenway Kenmore" neighborhood. They're really aren't overly close to either Simmons or Emmanuel so safety really isn't a problem if you're visiting a friend at either school. The only way to find trouble is if you walk through the unlit part of the Fens at night.
