@MYOS1634 Just for reference the school of communications at Syracuse is Newhouse, but I definitely think OP should consider it.
oops sorry typo (going fast).
But I stand by my recommendation for a match (not a safety).
@MYOS1634 not to downgrade Syracuse but isn’t their ACT range 24-29? And I’m sure my GPA is above its average by a decent amount as well. My extra curriculars aren’t spectacular but they are solid, especially the ones relating to journalism. Is Syracuse hard to get into out of state or something? I know they have a good journalism program, but it just seems that I am mostly above their admittance criteria.
Top Journalism programs like Newhouse will have higher admissions standards than the University as a whole. You’re probably still ok but you might look to see if the J-School numbers are available.
A quick search shows:
Selectivity
Newhouse now receives approximately 4,000 applications for a first-year class of 350. The typical admitted student is in the top 5 to 10 percent of his or her high school class, with a 3.9 GPA and an SAT score in the 1300s.
Syracuse is more or less a safety for you, but not Newhouse , which is much more selective, making it a match.
Newhouse is considered the best school at Syracuse and is highly regarded. It’s more selective than the university as a whole.
Missouri is hardly a safety school for journalism. It has one of the top - if not the top - journalism schools in the US. I hope you are not going into print journalism. I doubt you could earn enough money to pay rent on an apartment in Podunk, Nowhere. Print journalism is, right now, dead.
@Southlander nobody gets a TV/radio job right away. You look at everyone who’s on TV now they all started with print or maybe a very minor radio gig. My outlook is that I’ll start off somewhere small and I obviously won’t make much (which I’m fine with) but I have the confidence in myself as well as the dedication to believe I’ll work myself up the ladder.
@Southlander I know that Missouri has one of the top journalism schools in the country but the question is-Is it hard to get in? Does the journalism school have its own separate admissions process because the school overall is a safety for me probably.
@Southlander Also, I believe @silverlady said on this thread that I would be a direct admit even to the Journalism school
@nw2this I’ve seen that list, but what annoys me about it is the fact that it’s alphabetical, so you don’t know the difference between 1-10 and 40-50.
On Mizzou,
It’s fairly easy to change your status to in-state, after one year.
They also offer a series of OOS scholarships, including the Mark Twain Nonresident Scholarship:
See this link for details on getting admitted to the program (either via direct admit or pre-journalism).
Re: Post #32
The ranking doesn’t really matter if you want safeties that have good journalism programs. You know all of these will have solid programs, you just need to decide which ones are safeties by googling acceptance rates and average sat/act/gpa.
@nw2this I guess, but you have to admit that there’s a big difference between the 15th best Journalism School (which could still be a safety) and the 50th best.
Boston University School of Communications would be a safety for you.
