Safeties near Boston/NY?

What are some safeties near Boston or in NY? I really like the region and the majority of the schools I'm applying to are there: Boston College, Cornell, NYU, etc etc. And some other schools are still in the same area somewhat such as Brown and Dartmouth.

Try Boston University and Northeastern for the Boston area. If you like Brown's location in Rhode Island, try Providence College.

Thanks, I was planning on BU and Northeastern along with Emerson as well. But I don't know, I'm just paranoid that I won't get into those either despite having a great transcript and whatnot. I'm just not very confident in myself and I'm afraid I'll be stuck at some sucky state school in my home state of Ohio that no one's ever heard of and Ohio doesn't really have any good schools for what I want to do and are just plain boring (wow, run-on sentence much?!). I have a semi-safety which in Ohio is Case but that's along the same lines as BU and I don't think I'll get in there either/anywhere. =/

Any others?

conneticut college in RI could be a safety

Connecticut college is actually in Ct.
Providence, I agree
Holy Cross
Brandies
Umass Amhearst
Amhearst College
Tufts ?safety though.

Hard to know what's a safety without seeing your stats. It's context-dependent: a safety for one person might be a match or even a reach for someone else.

Ok, my stats are all honors/AP classes [senior year 6 APs] with straight A's so a 4.0 unweighted gpa (4.8 weighted) and rank in the top 10 kids of my class of 650 or so (not exactly sure which spot I am though, I just know this from the academic excellence passes we receive as part of being in the top 10 for entrance to school dances/games/plays/concerts free). ACT-28 which I took in summer with no studying/not knowing what to expect and ran out of time on one section, but am retaking and will be studying my butt off to get at least a 31. However where I lack is ECs which I think is what makes me so paranoid (besides the fact that everyone else applying will have stellar grades as well so I don't know how in the world I can stand out to get acceptance). I lack ECs (other than like, being secretary of Spanish club and a few other things such as being first chair of my section in orchestra, but I quit orchestra because I didn't have room for it in my schedule with all my AP classes) because I had to take care of my brother everyday after school until 1 a.m. which is when my mom would get home (parents worked odd hours/lots of overtime). On the other hand, I do have some things going for me as I am tri-lingual and would be a first generation college student as my parents are immigrants. I also think I have a compelling essay topic in mind, but I don't know if I can pull that off either. I'm such a worrywart when it comes to academics.

So with all that in mind, can you think of some safeties?

Wow... I think I take the cake for overusing parenthesis, eh? :)

honorstudent- what's that sucky state school in Ohio you were referring to? I bet I've heard of it.

From the looks of this post, it sounds like you want to get the hell out of Dodge. However, don't leave yet without looking at Miami of Ohio, Ohio Northern, and the Univ. of Dayton- I think you'll be pleasently surprised.

However, it sounds like the safeties you want are RIT and SUNY- Binghamton. You might also want to look into Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, Union, RPI and U Rochester for some more bigger-name schools, as well.

I like the same region of the country, too, and you might want to check the threads in my profile, because we have similar stats and probably similar interests in schools. So, good luck!

Holy Cross, SUNY Binghamton + Geneseo, RIT, Northeastern

honorstudent, is money a factor? You would likely see decent merit aid at Northeastern, NYU is well known for not giving great FA. Are you looking for academic safeties or financial safeties or both?

Ohio actually has three pretty solid state schools in tOSU, OU and MU...

I just do not want to stay in Ohio, lol. I'm not sure if money is a factor, like with everyone, yes it is to be taken into consideration, but it's not like my family couldn't afford 30k+ out of pocket either, so yes and no. But I'm really more concerned with academic safety, I don't want to be the overachiever who didn't get accepted to any of their schools and therefore is stuck at home going to a local school and despising it. But I don't know, like I said before, I'm just super paranoid mainly because of my ECs which I explained above why I lack even though I have a nice academic record. sigh

I thought the same, but I left, and it was a big mistake.

I understand why you want to leave, because it's Ohio, although those are three very solid schools.

Drew is a nice safety. Close enough to NYC that it is easy to get into the city on the weekend.

honorstudent 30plusK won't cover the full COA at some of the schools on your list.
Both of my children don't qualify for need based financial aid but are getting merit scholarships that bring their COA down to just around 27K per year.
I know it sounds silly to harp on money but you need to sit down now with your parents and run an EFC calculator. Figure out exactly what they have saved, how much you are willing to borrow, etc.
Every year there are students on CC who don't do this, get into their "dream" school and then realize they can't afford it.
Also I would not consider you super paranoid. When you are applying to the top tier schools, admission can be a total crapshoot. Almost every student who applies has great grades, SATs, and ECs.
My favorite story on that one: a friend's son was applying to an Ivy, the older brother had already received his BA from the same Ivy and was attending grad school there. The younger brother had an 800 on his math SAT. The interviewer was like "yawn, that's nice but what is special about you?"

Amherst is no one's safety school. Can't figure why Hockeymomofthree picked either it or Tufts... regardless of honors.

This was a little hidden away in the wall of text, so maybe no one noticed it. Taking care of family is a better EC than any school activity.

Try to CUNY schools.

lockn- Thanks, that makes me feel better!

And thanks for the suggestions everybody! They are great!

Any Division I schools in the New England/NY area, preferably private, that could be considered somewhat of a safety besides Syracuse?

Are you a junior now? Your grades look great, hopefully your ACT will go up (keep trying!) and the fact that you will be first generation and are tri-lingual will help you. I'd suggest some small liberal arts schools like Connecticut College and Trinity as back-ups as well as schools like Bates, maybe Vassar, Wesleyan, and others that are VERY good schools but somewhat easier to get into than Brown, Dartmouth etc. Picking one within your reach and applying ED should help too. Good luck!
