Hi all! According to my advisory, I need to come up with a strong group (~4+) of safety schools. Are there any schools on the east coast with intellectual/happy/otherwise strong student bodies that I may not have heard of due to their being small or having high acceptance rates? The sense of community at the colleges I’m looking at is very important to me. Thanks
We’ll need some more info- stats, interests, size concerns, financial needs (merit or need based aid)? What are your reach type schools?
My stats are a little complicated, but the simplified version is 2230 sat, public school w/ early college AA degree program, ~3.6-3.7 gpa. My chances post is here if you want the full description: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1778892-what-are-my-chances-brown-davidson-etc.html
Interests: english, art history, neuroscience, french, studio art
Size: ideally above 1,500 but below 7,000, though there is wiggle room
Financial needs: my family is in a relatively high income bracket, but some merit aid would be nice if the school offers it.
Reaches: Brown, Northwestern, Davidson, Vassar, etc.
Goucher, Skidmore, Drew, Hampshire, Clark, Bennington, Eugene Lang/New School, Wheaton (MA), New College of FL (if you’re willing to go as far south as FL) . . .
Skidmore is a safety for you. You are way into the top 25% of Skidmore applicants so I would consider that a safety. If you need more assurance then Muhlenberg, St. Lawrence, Gettysburg, Dickinson maybe even Lafayette could count as a safety. If you dip too low you could easily be rejected because someone with your stats will stick out as someone that will never attend. Another great one would be Connecticut College, which is every bit as good as the other LACs you mentioned but overshadowed by the other NESCAC schools. Clark is another excellent idea. Since you live in New York and may want a high probability acceptance then TCNJ is another great one.
@BatesParent2019 Ah, I think my aunt and uncle went to Connecticut! I’ve heard nothing but good things.
Consider some of the all women’s schools if you are female: Bryn Mawr, Mt. Holyoke. Very strong academics but less selective than comparable coed schools.
Connecticut College, Dickinson
These schools are probably in the low match/safety range.
Remember, with smaller schools it is important to demonstrate interest.
Lafayette, Muhlenberg, Dickinson and Gettysburg are an easy trip from NY. Lafayette and Muhlenberg are a little over an hour away if the Lincoln Tunnel is clear. You should visit them. Dickinson is so nice and such a good school you may make it a top choice. It has one of the nicest in town campuses I have seen.
In the mid Atlantic area consider George Washington in DC if urban appeals and for a true safety (and a gem of a small LAC with major school community) check out Washington College in Chesterstown, MD. Most on CC have not heard of it but it is a wonderful school.
@BatesParent2019 I actually already visited Muhlenberg (my twin brother was/is interested in it) and thought it was really sweet! We were a bit taken in by the theater building, and the giant stuffed polar bear was a nice touch. We also drove through Dickinson, but didn’t get a tour. It seemed very quiet.
@Ir4550 Thank you for the recommendation(s)!
Clark, Sarah Lawrence, Hampshire
