After exhaustive research, I think I'm just about set on wanting to go to Howard for a number of reasons. However, there are a few things that leave me a little hesitant.

-Safety. I've heard mixed views on safety at Howard. I've heard that it's a real dangerous place but at the same time I've been told that so long as you're not an idiot and you stay aware of your surroundings you should be fine.

-Availability of resources. The main problem with a lot of HBCUs is that they're under-resourced, but, I've heard that Howard pumps a lot of its money into academics. Is this true?

How are the dorms? The food?

I should be planning a visit in the near future but in the meantime, any insight is appreciated.

My daughter attends. I can give you 2nd hand information.

Safety. This would be a concern no matter where she attended. Howard is as safe as can be expected at an urban school. ( I live in a large city, so my perspective may be skewed). Take precautions as you would normally, and you should be ok. No one is breaking into the dorms, and there is a security presense on campus.

Availability of resources. Howard is rich with resources, however, they are not handed to you on a silver platter. Some things are obvious. If you are motivated, you will find want you want.

Dorms. There are several flavors of dorms..freshman women, freshmen men. My daughter stays in Bethune Annex. It is a suite dorm. It also has a cafeteria. It's the quiet dorm. And it has air conditioning. The Quad is the more social freshman female dorm and it's larger.

The freshmen male dorms, I honestly can't rememebr, but one is like, if you make it through the year there, you are a real Howard Man :)

For sophomore year, my daughter will be staying in Howard Towers, an on-campus apartment complex. I'll have to see it when I pick her up.

Thank you so much! I’ve been doing a lot of research on Howard lately and I’ve been trying to gather as many opinions of the school of possible. I’ve booked a visit so I can develop one of my own but I’m glad to hear the perspective of a Howard parent.

I went today and it was amazing. The campus is safe. I mean the campus is embedded in the city like I guess anyone can walk on it but I didn’t see anyone that wasn’t a student walk on there. There’s security all over the place and emergency consoles so if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe someone can escort you anytime of the day.

But there was this random drunk guy in front of the bookstore at like 11 am in the morning lol, but besides that it was great. I mean it is the city so what else can you expect.

You’ll love it. Im so going there. That atmosphere, everything about it was amazing. Haha if i keep going I’ll be on here for a year.
