Safety at RPI

Hello there. I am a new member at College Confidential. My daughter will be attending RPI in the fall. She is my only child, and I can't stop worrying that she'll be so far away from home. Can anyone who has been at RPI or Troy, New York tell me about the safety there? How are the students' lives like, and would it be safe for students to study there? Have there been any bad incidents in the university or in the city? Much thanks.

Just have her go out with someone at night, Troy is rough

It is always a good idea not to go around alone on any college campus or town at night. However, when talking to a current student that our family personally knows (who is a sophomore), she did not express concerns about her safety at RPI. Downtown Troy (down the hill from the college), looks sketchy at night, and I would definitely avoid it unless with other people. My daughter will also be attending RPI from out of state. We are very excited about visiting RPI during the summer orientation. :)

My son is a current freshman. He did have some sweatshirts stolen from the laundry, but that could happen anywhere. I haven’t worried about his safety, but I do agree you shouldn’t be walking around at night by yourself. Common sense goes a long way, on any college campus.

BTW - Welcome to RPI. Both my son and I have been very happy with RPI so far.

You can get crime data at [National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Home Page, a part of the U.S. Department of Education](http://www.nces.ed.gov) for any college. Search on the school and then click on the security section.

Most schools (RPI did 30 years ago when I was a student. Don’t know about now.) have a escort service at night where someone will walk with you back to the dorms if you requested. Their web site will probably have details.

There was a thread on this a few years ago:

And, yes, RPI still has the safety escort service:

I spent 4 delightful years in Troy 20 years ago, and I’ve been back with some regularity. I have friends who still live in Troy. Troy is poor, but relatively safe. If you ignore a certain amount of urban decay, it’s a beautiful, little Victorian city with a grand history.
