Safety at Syracuse and in the city?

My D has been accepted to Syracuse and my husband is worried about the reputation for crime/ safety in and around the city and the campus. Any insights or advice?

DD will be attending in the fall and is really excited to be Orange! . I had the same concerns. There are several websites where you can search for school crime statistics. SU is a relatively safe campus. Like any campus, I would advise my daughter to travel in groups at night on campus and avoid certain areas all together after dark. My son is a college senior in a major city and third degree black belt. He has followed that same advice. Here is one of the links which you can cut and paste: http://www.ope.ed.gov/security/GetOneInstitutionData.aspx</a>
Good luck to you. Syracuse looks like the perfect fit for my daughter!

I’m a current student. Campus hill is very safe. There are students everywhere. It’s advisable not to walk around off campus in the middle of the night alone, but that’s really how it is anywhere. There are rough parts of the city, but that’s how it is in any city center. Tell your daughter not to go to Thornden Park at night or stumble around off campus at night alone when she’s drunk. More often than not, that’s where/when the crime happens. Other than that, the city seems a bit gritty and rundown, but it’s safe as long as you know where to avoid when you’re off campus.
